Texans Wanting To Quit Smoking Have Reason To Hope

October 29th, 2008 by admin

When it comes to smoking, there’s little doubt as to the health effects. Smoking is unhealthy.

The real issue for people in Texas, and particularly in the urban areas of Dallas, Houston and Austin, is how to quit and keep from starting again.

Connected to the issue are concerns related to smoking, among them the issue of weight gain that sometimes occurs when people quit.

Although not everyone will gain weight, there is a physical reason for some gaining (on average that amount is only about 10 pounds, according to some experts). In reality, it’s the nicotine contained in cigarette smoke that was responsible for someone keeping their weight low. When they quit, the nicotine (which is harmful) leaves, freeing up the body to return to the weight it would have been had a person never smoked.

Another option for avoiding the possibility of weight gain is to become more physically active and improve eating habits before someone stops smoking. Physical activity will help avoid weight gain because of its inherent ability to increase the number of calories being used by the human body. At the same time, healthy eating choices play a part in controlling the amount of calories a person consumes.

One study showed women who stopped smoking and added 45 minutes of walking a day to their lifestyle gained fewer than three pounds. Exercise is also a way to increase a person’s energy, to promote self-confidence and relieve the stress and depression caused by the lack of nicotine, all while improving a person’s overall health.

Those who think they have “no time” for exercise might consider how they’re spending the time they do have. If it’s watching television or playing video games, some of those hours could be put to better use taking a walk or going to the gym, perhaps bringing along a music player if the exercise itself isn’t enough of a diversion.

When it comes to eating healthy, a gradual change can go a long way toward developing a healthier lifestyle.

Choosing a variety of foods is a good way to start, with choices including grain products, vegetables and fruits. Lean and low-fat foods, along with low-calorie beverages, are good choices, as are low-fat dairy products, lean meats, fish, poultry and dry beans, all of which give someone the nutrients they need without the extra calories and fats. Those with an interest in improving health should also consider avoiding foods that are high in fat and sugars and low in nutrients.

Even with the emphasis on healthy choices when it comes to food, weight gain is hardly a reason for not quitting smoking.

Indeed, the health risks of smoking are far greater than the risks of gaining a modest amount of weight. Even smokers who have health insurance are subject to the effects of smoking, which include increased heart rate and the exposure of some 4,000 chemicals, 40 of which are known to cause cancer.

Smokers are much more likely to get lung cancer, men 22 times more likely; women at least 12 times more than someone who does not smoke. For smokers, the likelihood of having a heart attack is double that of nonsmokers.

The good news is that the human body has the capability of healing from the effects of smoking once a smoker quits. Even within twelve hours of taking a last cigarette, the body begins its repairing process, starting with the lungs and heart. Over time, breathing becomes easier and the classic smoker’s cough begins to go away.

In a world that’s becoming increasingly environmentally conscious, people who quit smoking are making a contribution to cleaner air, especially important for children who are at risk for illnesses because they breathe cigarette smoke coming from others.

Once someone quits smoking, there are strategies to consider that improve the likelihood of remaining smoke-free.

One is to learn how to reduce cravings for both cigarettes and food. One key point is that a craving typically lasts only about five minutes. When those cravings do kick in, try to replace smoking with other activities such as snacking on fruit or chewing sugarless gum as a way to satisfy any sweet cravings.

If keeping your hands busy is an issue, replace the action of holding cigarettes with activities such as doodling, working puzzles, knitting, twirling a straw or holding a pen or pencil.

People who quit smoking can maximize the chance of maintaining their healthier lifestyle by drinking less caffeine (which can make nicotine withdrawal even harder to deal with), getting enough sleep, reducing tension (where exercise can also help), and making sure they get the support and encouragement they need (from friends or groups dedicated to helping people quit smoking).

Finally, If nicotine withdrawal becomes an issue, a discussion with a physician may be in order. Some nicotine replacement products, once available only by prescription, are now available over the counter.

The best way to avoid the harmful effects of tobacco is to not start smoking. But even if you have started and want to quit, there’s every chance of a healthier future.

Does Hypnosis Exist?

Does Hypnosis Exist?

Many years ago, as a young boy, I sat in a crowded theatre and watched as a dark dressed figure had a dozen if not more fully grown adults under a magical spell. With a single word he turned the roughest council worker into a swan princess ballerina who effortlessly danced and span across the stage, arm in arm with an even rougher-looking motor biker. They gracefully swung each other around and around like they were dancing their finest steps. The audience was roaring with laugher, whilst I watched and wondered what was REALLY going on. Did this “magician” use magic I wasn’t aware of? Did he pay the people beforehand to “pretend”?All I did know is that I had to discover more. Hypnotherapy in Australia back in the day, wasnt something many people identified with.In the course of my discoveries, Hypnosis had been explained to me that was something intangible that was both “evil” and “nonexistent”. I wondered to myself, how can something be evil if it doesn’t exist?I was curious to know more…Fast-forward to many years in the future, I had studied many thousands of hours and was able to make the toughest bloke blush. I had learnt it wasn’t a mystical and magical power, Hypnosis was something very natural and very familiar to us all.As you sit in your seat and are on your computer and are reading this web site and focusing on the white text on the darker background, I’m curious to know if you can think back to that time where you were watching television or listening to music or perhaps it was when you were thinking those many thoughts in your mind that you just didn’t hear that person talking to you, didn’t notice that person had even walked into the room, or that you had driven a whole journey without really noticing all the details whilst you drove along. After all, your mind couldn’t possibly focus on all the unimportant details while you were becoming more absorbed in what you were doing, so your subconscious mind took on the management of those things so you could better place your attention on your thoughts instead. (Don’t tell anyone this is a natural trance - a hypnotic state you put yourself into). That’s right, whether you are tuning-out on music, really getting into that movie, standing in an elevator thinking about all sorts of things, or doing the million-thought drive in your car, you are in natural states of Hypnosis. Incidentally, the most common form of natural Hypnosis is that sleepy state where you are still awake, just before you drop off to sleep where thoughts are flying around your mind.HOLD ON! - Yeah, I can hear some of you screaming in protest at that last paragraph. “If I’m in Hypnosis, how is it I don’t crash my car, or, how come i’m not dancing around like a chicken?” - There is a part of the mind, that sits between the conscious and the subconscious mind called the Conscious Critical Factor (The CCF as some call it). The job of the critical factor is to facilitate the information that comes into a person that gets sorted into true/false allocations. After a bit of information is classed as true, it is further sorted into how it relates to existing belief structures, habits and understandings. If the information is classed as false, it may be distorted (molded to something the subconscious can understand), or most likely, deleted. As the conscious mind can typically handle only 7-9 single bits of information, everything above that amount is automatically handled by the CCF. This is why when you talk to someone and they don’t hear you, it is because their conscious mind is already at its limits - so the CCF deletes the extra information, or passes what is needed directly to the subconscious mind (and unfortunately, the conscious mind misses the conversation all together). With Hypnosis, a person is led into this Altered State of awareness by overloading and bypassing the CCF and allowing the conscious mind to “let go”. A person in Hypnosis will still hear what is said to them as it offers the conscious mind a manner in which to be of use to the overall system. Of course, by bypassing the CCF, Hypnotherapists can get to the cause of problems in life (such as depression, over-eating, anxiety etc) and have the person reprogram their internal computer to operate in a more productive manner. If you think of a car with a problem in the engine area, Hypnosis is the ability to pop the bonnet and access the area that is causing the issue. Talking therapies such as Psychology, Counseling and the like rely on the conscious mind to divulge information relating to the problem in the hope the client and therapist can work on the area. Unfortunately (and this is where conventional talk therapies fail most often), the conscious mind has no idea where the problem exists, let alone how to repair it.As it is the subconscious that handles and manages everything behind the scenes, one needs to access the subconscious mind to effect any great deal of change work. If the subconscious mind manages all your beliefs, all your habits, all your patterns and ways of operating, going to the conscious mind and arguing your case certainly wont let you change much, except the way the client feels about the therapist.I personally have worked with clients that have spent over a decade on traditional talk therapies and feel they are no different. And why should they be? If you want to fix a problem with your cars engine, you don’t start by taking your car to a carwash?

Lose Pounds While Doing Chores by Joey Dweck

October 29th, 2008 by admin

One of the quickest and most effective ways to lose weight and sustain weight loss is to increase the energy that you put into your regular chores. Believe it or not, you lose a significant number of calories through your daily activities, as long as your activities are not just sitting at your desk or watching television. In one hour of housework, you can actually burn as many calories as you would during one hour of walking or leisurely riding a bicycle.

The key to losing weight while doing everyday chores is to infuse your routine with vigor. Instead of slowly going through your task list, do it quickly. Being a busybody truly does have more benefit when it comes to weight loss than being a simpleton.

Here is a list of some common chores with some ways to infuse them with that added kick that can help you burn 100-300 extra calories per hour:

Laundry

Laundry baskets are heavy and require much lifting. The next time you take your laundry to your laundry room, lift the basket up and down as you walk. Lifting the basket will help to build your muscles and burn a handful of extra categories.

When you put laundry in the washer or drying, extend your legs as you bend. Extending your legs will help you get a helpful stretch in them, which will increase your flexibility and muscle tone.

Finally, when folding clothes or ironing, avoid simply sitting while you go through the task. Stand, bend your legs at the knees and do squats. Doing squats during these small intervals will help to build and tone your thigh muscles, which will, in turn, help to burn more calories on a regular basis.

Mowing the Lawn

If you mow the lawn regularly, you know that a certain degree of muscle strength is required in order to push the mower across the lawn. First, avoid using a riding lawn mower, even if you have a large lawn to cover. Use your push mower as if it were a stack of weights. Pushing from your chest, use your arms to push it across the lawn rather than your body. You will be tempted to simply use your body weight to push the equipment forward, but by pushing with your arms, you will build your triceps and biceps.

Dusting

Dusting is a relatively low-impact and exertion house chore. However, you will see benefit if you dust quickly. By speeding through your routine, you will notice that you are actually exhausted, if not out of breath, by the time you are finished. Do not scrimp on the corners, however, simply because you are dusting quickly. With the extra few minutes you save by speeding through your routine, do a few squats, push-ups or stretches. You will be amazed by what you can accomplish quickly.

Car Washing

Washing your car helps you burn a huge amount of calories. The next time your vehicle needs a bath, avoid taking it to the local car wash. Instead, vigorously scrub it down using soap and sponges. The activity will help you build muscle and will get you in action. Any action more than sitting will help you increase the number of calories your body consumes.

How To Relax And Fall Asleep
by Niall Roche

Many people that suffer from restlessness or insomnia on a regular basis are looking for ways to relax and fall asleep each night. There are many different techniques that can be used by an person to help them fall asleep each night and each method will need to be tested to judge each methods effectiveness. The person may have to try several different methods before finding one that works well for them.

One of the most effective ways to relax and fall asleep is to change the persons lifestyle to make sure that there are no distractions or exciting events occurring near the persons bed time that could reawaken their mind making it harder to fall asleep. Experts recommend not watching television in the bed before going to sleep and doing other tasks in the bed, such as working or reading, will condition the body to be alert while lying in the bed. It is believed that the more that the bed is used for sleeping only, the more conditioned the person will become to falling asleep quickly once they have gotten into the bed.

Some people choose to use relaxation techniques to prepare them for getting into the bed and going to sleep at night. Taking a warm bath scented with lavender or other relaxing scents is one way that people relax their mind and body before going to bed. Meditation and light exercise are other ways that people use to prepare their body for going to bed each night. Making sure that the person gets into the bed and immediately tries to go to sleep can also go a long way towards falling asleep quickly each night.

Some people need the help of sleep aids to relax and fall asleep each night. This can occur for many reasons including increased stress, lifestyle changes, new medications, or physical injury. There are several different types of sleep aids that can be used by people for sleeping through during the night and each one has its benefits.

The most commonly used sleep aids for falling asleep quickly are sleep aids that include drugs that can help a person sleep. These sleep aids can be purchased either over the counter at the persons local grocery store or with a doctors prescription from the local pharmacist. Humans are getting increasingly obese every day. Even our kids are becoming perilously overweight, although we have become more mindful of our looks. but, there is no magical method of staying fit. Firstly, heredity is one unmodifiable factor that affects our health. Secondly an increase in the standard of living has resulted in junk food and other fattening products being easily available.

If you have a deskbound job you are inclined to put on more weight. In addition, monotony tends to increase the want to eat more.

So what to do? First and foremost, you have to want it with all your heart. Secondly, you have to be strong-minded to live a healthier life. Eat rationally all the time and not to starve.

Majority of the time people just eat a lot.have moderately sized portions many times a day; this would increase your metabolism rate too. Do not eat after you are full.

Exercising is what; majority of people do not desire to do but is a must… Moderate exercise can itself work wonders in making you healthier. Do activities you enjoy and be diligent.

Prevention is always better than cure and therefore there are no justifications to not try and stay in shape. Health is more important than money. Thus it is wise to take heed of your health while you earn rather than later spending all your money in getting back to shape. Its never very late to start working towards a fitter body and life

Another trouble is of people being lazy. Easy enough. Exercising helps ease depression and anxiety. Being lazy only gets you discouragement. It’s a vicious cycle. Even a 30 minute exercise can make a great difference. You can workout while watching television or for a workout you can play with your children in the park.

It is comparatively a lot easier to keep the fat off than it is to lose weight once you have gained it. Thus do not stop working out even if you are in a good shape. It’s easier to carry on with an already established practice.

LASIK Eye Surgery Recovery Issues by Carson Danfield

LASIK Eye Surgery Recovery Issues by Carson Danfield

In the vast majority of cases, recovery from LASIK eye surgery is quick and uneventful. However, as with most all medical procedures, there are certain risks, ut if you take the recommended precautions, you’ll have little to worry about. One of the most important aspects in promoting the healing process is to avoid dry eyes. Dry eyes can act like an abrasive to the cornea and invite infection. You’ll want to use artificial tear drops on a regular basis during healing, especially if you sense dryness. An additional unwanted side effect of dryness is the increased tendency to want to rub your eyes. Rubbing, particularly during the first week or two should be strictly avoided. Rubbing can scratch the cornea or even worse - it can cause the corneal flap to become detached, requiring medical assistance for correction.During the first four hours after LASIK eye surgery, your doctor will prescribe certain medications to be applied frequently, usually at 15 minute intervals. These medications will usually consist of steroids to promote healing and antibiotics to prevent infection. Be sure to adhere to the prescribed regimen of applying these medications. You may want to limit reading, watching television or working at the computer for the first couple of days after LASIK eye surgery. Even though you’ll notice a marked improvement in your vision, you may be subject to headaches if you overdo things during the early stages of your recovery.Avoid any dusty areas or anywhere that has particulate matter in the air. For example, don’t mow the lawn, as the mower can still up grass clippings or other debris that can enter your eyes and cause complications. Also be aware that pet hair can sometimes float in the air and get in your eyes, even if you don’t notice the intrusion.Be careful when showering so that you don’t allow the stream of water to hit your eyes. Also, don’t allow soap or shampoo to enter your eyes. Avoid steam rooms and swimming pools during the healing process. It’s also a good idea to forego any strenuous exercise or sports activities. It’s important that you protect your eyes from any undue pressure and don’t let any foreign objects come into contact with your eyes.During the healing process, you may notice that your eyes are very sensitive to bright light, so be sure to wear sunglasses if you go outdoors.Complications during recovery from LASIK eye surgery are rare, but they do occur. If you notice anything questionable during your recovery period, be sure to consult with your doctor immediately.
