Let me start with the facts. These “facts” are not just hypothetical ideas. They are actual statistics and actual studies that show that chiropractic care for children is not only safe, it is vital. Take these figures into account:

- A study done by Abraham Towbin, M.D., an expert in pathology, shows that“Spinal cord and brain stem injuries occur often during the process of birth but frequently escape diagnosis.” (Towbin, A., “Latent Spinal Cord and brain Stem Injury in Newborn Infants”, Develp Med. Child. Neurol, 11:54-68,1969) This often leads to something known as Blocked Atlantal Nerve Syndrome, a primary cause of upper respiratory infections including ear infections and chronic tonsillitis. What we have going on here is a high prevalence of something known as “birth trauma” that is causing children to suffer as they grow. When bones misalign they press on nerves. When this happens, the whole body suffers as a result. These misalignments are known as “subluxations.” So the question is what type of healthcare practitioner is trained and qualified to diagnose and correct such a condition? Only a Doctor of Chiropractic can do this, particularly one who has specialized training in the care of pediatric patients.

Birth trauma causes DIRECT impingement on the tiny nerves of a child. However, there are two other major reasons why subluxations may occur indirectly: mental stress and toxic stress. While mental stress may not be so prevalent in childhood years, toxic stress is, particularly because many vaccinations contain compounds such as thimerosal and formaldehyde as preservatives. A child’s immune system isn’t even fully developed until after the age of two years. Thus, vaccinating a child before the immune system is even capable of handling such an antigen can impair the immune system’s response at a later time. I am often asked by mothers-to-be what is the safest way to give birth in order to minimize the occurrence of birth trauma. The baby has the benefit of having a gravity-assisted birth that minimizes the amount of force being placed on the baby’s head and neck. Mom doesn’t feel as much pain because the baby is not pressing down on the sacral plexus of nerves as it usually is in the typical “lithotomy” position (mom lying flat on her back with legs up in stirrups). These safer, less painful positions minimize the chance that both mom and her baby will suffer from a subluxation.

Children who receive regular chiropractic care do indeed live healthier lives. While I was a chiropractic intern at Life University in Marietta, GA, I met many people my own age who have never been sick in their life. They said that the key to their abounding level of wellness was that they have never received a vaccination and they’ve been receiving chiropractic care since the day they were born. I have seen for myself how much happier and vibrant children who receive chiropractic care are. It is so heartwarming to see children who no longer have to take medications such as Ritalin, asthma medications, or antibiotics because they started receiving chiropractic care instead. Seeing a child who was once sickly be able to laugh and play with other kids in an optimal state of wellness gives me the greatest joy. Chiropractic works!

Asthma in Adolescents

Most of the teenagers who have asthma are also allergic to many things. The asthma can get severe even if the people with asthma are exposed to allergens of low grade. Allergies play an important role in asthma cased which are undiagnosed. Other factors that also trigger childhood asthma include upper respiratory infections like colds, second hand smoke, and certain climate conditions like cold air and due to emotional physical expressions like laughing, crying or yelling. However, it is not the end of the road for asthmatics as they can live active and healthy if they manage asthma properly by avoiding asthma triggers, regular intake of prescribed medications, being alert of the warnings and be aware of the ways to deal with an asthma attack.

There is a great consensus among the parents whether their children would outgrow asthma as they grow up. But the truth is it depends from child to child. While some children experience improvement in their teens others see asthma becoming even more severe. But almost half of the children who have asthma outgrow asthma as they grow although some symptoms may come back later.

Many parents have questions like whether their children can take part in sport activities. The answer is both yes and no. Some kids may get an asthma attack when they participate in exercises like running. But with proper management a teenager suffering from asthma can actively participate in sports. Special aerobic exercises can improve airway function. This strengthens the breathing muscles. Carrying a reliever is a must for asthmatic teens which would come handy if asthma attack occurs. It is not easy for adolescent teens to attend school when they have asthma but it is not difficult also at the same time if proper coordination is made among the teenager, doctor, family and school employees. It is a good idea to consult teachers, nurses and other pertaining employees of the school and let them know that the teenager has asthma and may have special requirements. Also, let the school management know on medications the teenager regularly takes and how to help the teenager when an attack occurs. The school staff should be asked to treat the teen normally once the attack subsides. The physical education coach should also be informed about the condition so that he/she can let the kid stretch the muscles before any exercises or to deal with asthma attack induced due to exercises. Also, before admitting the teenager to a new school care must be taken to check the quality of air, irritants and allergens if any present in the school. The school staff should take considerations to avoid symptoms which could hamper the energy level kids. Also asthmatic teens should be assured from time to time that they are no different from others and asthma in any way does not slow them down, They need this emotional confidence otherwise they may have personality problems.

Children and Nosebleeds - What Every Parent Should Know

I had no idea how many children suffered from nosebleeds until I started to talk to friends and family about it. Epistaxis, the medical term for nosebleed, seems to be most common in childhood and old age. My daughter started having nosebleeds when she was ten years old and they have become more frequent over the past two years, which prompted some research on my part. I began to realize that it was much more common than I had expected. The other thing I realized was, those children that were prone to getting nosebleeds seemed to outgrow them when they became adults, or at least the frequency of nosebleeds was reduced. Is it because their bodies changed as they grew up? Could diet have anything to do with it? What about childhood behaviour vs. adult behaviour? Could stress be a factor?Much research has been done by experts in this area. Although occasional nosebleeds can often be taken care of through correct home treatment, chronic nosebleeds can be an indication of a more serious problem and should be treated by an Otolaryngologist (Ear, Nose and Throat specialist). Whether your child suffers from sporadic or chronic nosebleeds, here is some information which may help parents to cope.So…Why Do Children Get Nosebleeds?Some of the most common causes of nosebleeds are due to children picking their nose, blowing it too hard, falling or knocking their nose while playing, or even putting something up their nose. Nosebleeds can also occur due to nasal membranes that dry out, crust or crack. This is common in dry climates, or during the winter months when furnaces and heaters can dry out the air indoors. The incidents of nosebleeds are therefore higher in the cold winter months. Upper respiratory infections are also frequent during the winter months and can contribute to nosebleeds. Some children have veins that are closer to the mucous membrane of their nose than other children. The nose will bleed when one of the small veins in the lining bursts.What Should You Do When Your Child Gets A Nosebleed?The first thing a parent should do is to remain calm. A nosebleed can be quite traumatic for a child. There is usually a lot of blood and no warning signs. The blood loss always looks greater than the actual amount of blood that is lost.1. Have your child sit down, keeping their head straight, without tilting it backward or forward. Do not let your child lie down. This will cause the blood to run down the throat and if a child swallows a lot of blood it will make them vomit.2. Hold their nostrils with your fingers, tissue or a facecloth. Pinch the lower, fleshy part of the nose firmly between your thumb and index finger.3. Hold the nose for at least ten minutes. This should stop the bleeding by giving the blood a chance to clot. For the younger child, ten minutes can be a very long time to sit, so it’s a good idea to give them something to play with, or move them to watch television, so they will remain calm. Repeat as necessary until the nose has stopped bleeding.4. Sometimes an ice pack can help quite a bit. The cold encourages the blood vessels to narrow and reduces bleeding.5. After the nosebleed has stopped, the child should avoid rough play for a couple of hours to prevent the nosebleed starting again. Sometimes even lowering the head will send the blood rushing to the head and ultimately out the nose again. Tell your child not to pick, blow or rub their nose for the next couple of days to promote healing.How Long Does It Take To Heal?It takes seven to ten days to completely heal the rupture in the blood vessel that caused the nose to bleed in the first place. By applying a small amount of antibiotic ointment two or three times a day with a cotton swab, you will stop the itching and prevent crusting of mucus that may tempt your child to pick their nose.For the child that seems to do nothing to promote the nose to bleed, try buying a humidifier for their room to keep the nasal cavity moist in an attempt to prevent the nasal membranes from drying out and cracking. Fill the humidifier with distilled water for protection from impurities in tap water, and clean the unit at least once a week with vinegar and water. You can also lubricate the nose with a nasal gel, petroleum jelly, nose drops, or a nasal mist.Avoid giving your child aspirin or other medications that thin the blood and may trigger bleeding.
