Pilonidal cyst - Prevention Tips and Treatment Methods

Pilonidal cyst is a cyst at the bottom of the tailbone that can become infected and filled with pus. Pilonidal disease consists of a spectrum of entities ranging from asymptomatic hair containing cysts and sinuses to a large abscess in the sacrococcygeal area. A pilonidal cyst can be painful enough to make sitting or walking difficult, and in some cases pus or blood may drain from the pit. A traumatic event is not believed to cause a pilonidal cyst, such an event that has been known to inflame an existing cyst. It is more common in men than in women. It usually happens in young people up into the fourth decade of life. Men are affected two to three times more often than are women, and the cysts typically affect those younger than 40.Risk factors for pilonidal disease include male gender, hirsute individuals. Pilonidal disease affects approximately 26 per 100,000 people. Pilonidal disease commonly affects adults in the second to third decade of life. The average age of presentation is 21 years for men and 19 years for women. It is common to find hair follicles inside the cyst. Pilonidals can go dormant for years at a time, lulling their owner into a false sense of escape. The main concern is infection, which can result in a painful abscess. Signs and symptoms of an abscess include pain, localized swelling, redness, fever and drainage of pus. Treatment of pilonidal disease is straightforward.Surgery on a cyst in the natal cleft involves cutting out the skin and sinus in this area. Varying methods are used to either pack the wound, or marsupialize it (suture it partially and even completely). Remove any hair from this area on a regular basis. Clean the area daily with glycerin soap, which tends to be less irritating. Washing briskly with a washcloth helps keep the area free of hair accumulation. Keep the area clean and dry. Avoid sitting for long periods of time. Shaving of hair around the abscess or sinus should be considered to prevent recurrence. Keep the area clean and dry. Don’t use powders, oils or herbal remedies on this area. Meticulous hygiene should be encouraged. Between 60% and 80% of people heal after a minor procedure to open and clean the infected cyst Pilonidal cyst - Prevention and Treatment Tips 1. Remove any hair from this area on a regular basis. 2. Miscellaneous Information on PTSD

Miscellaneous Information on PTSD

Briefly described, PTSD is a psychiatric disorder that can develop in a person after a traumatic experience, it can be further described as, an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical harm occurred or was threatened. PTSD is different from most mental-health diagnoses because it is tied to a to particular life experience. The meaning that one attaches to the traumatic event is what actually changes the person’s experience of self. Many sufferers impose dramatic restrictions on their social activity, not out of fear of a traumatic reminder, but out of embarrassment in anticipation of a panic attack that would be witnessed by others. PTSD is characterized by flashbacks of the event, anxiety, and social withdrawal. A person having a flashback, which can come in the form of images, sounds, smells, or feelings, usually believes that the traumatic event is happening all over again. All people with PTSD have lived through a traumatic event that caused them to fear for their lives, see horrible things, and feel helpless. PTSD symptoms usually start soon after the traumatic event, but they may not happen until months or years later. Social support may speed up recovery from PTSD and help someone overcome the effects of a traumatic event. They may experience sleep problems, poor concentration, irritability/anger, hyper vigilance (constantly scanning the environment for danger), extreme physical reactivity, recurrent and distressing nightmares of the traumatic event, feel detached or numb, or be easily startled.PTSD is complicated by the fact that people with PTSD often may develop additional disorders such as depression, substance abuse, problems of memory and cognition, and other problems of physical and mental health. When these additional disorders are added to the already discomfort that exists for these individuals it complicates the diagnosis and their lives; and many times creates an incorrect diagnosis which can be even more devastating for the individual. Safe groups where they can share and talk about their feelings are very beneficial; as they need to be able to have a voice and talk about their feelings with others that are in the same situation.

Hair Loss In Children: Why My Child?

October 27th, 2008 by admin

Hair Loss In Children: Why My Child?

Children often take hair loss better than adults, up until the age of ten. Less of their identity is tied into their appearance, and so the loss of hair is not as shocking for them. There are several reasons that a child may lose their hair which are not life threatening.Common Reasons for Childhood Hair LossA reason that many children begin losing their hair is Tinea Captis, also known as ringworm of the scalp. This is a fungal infection which affects both the hair follicles and individual strands. If not treated with medicine immediately, it can be contagious.Another reason for childhood hair loss is Alopecia Areata, which can cause baldspots on the head and other areas of body hair. It is theorized to occur when the immune system begins attacking follicles. With treatment started immediately, some body hair may be saved.Another cause of childhood hair loss is called Trichotillomania. It is a self-inflicted condition which is considered on the obsessive compulsive spectrum. In it, a child feels the need to obsessively pluck hair from their head. This condition is usually treated with some kind of behavioral therapy, often including relaxation techniques. Because the hair follicle is not usually damaged, hair should grow back when the plucking of it is ended.Other conditions which can cause hair to stop growing include individual trauma, and traction alopecia. In this disease, the hair is pulled at or rubbed constantly. The resulting trauma to the hair shaft can cause hair to stop growing. Severe hair styles may also cause this reaction.A body’s response to trauma can also lead to hair loss. After a traumatic event, some people’s bodies withdraw nutrients from the hair, causing it to fall out. Hair loss does not need to traumatize a child. A parent with the right attitude can help their child through hair loss with support.

A Look At What Can Cause Phobia

October 26th, 2008 by admin

A Look At What Can Cause Phobia

The answer isn’t as easy as you might think. Fear is an emotion which develops out of uncertainty. And uncertainty itself is, basically, the perceived inability to control. Put this way it appears very simple - fear is not real, fear is just a perception. If only we could convince ourselves of that! Much is still unknown about what causes phobias. However, there may be a strong correlation between your phobias and the phobias of your parents. Children may learn phobias by observing a family member’s phobic reaction to an object or a situation. An example of a common learned phobia may be the fear of snakes. The biggest trigger of fear is the thought of the “unknown” - that is, when we are confronted or experiencing particular situations, we are not exactly sure of what will happen to us and how it will ultimately affect us. Or in some instances, we jump ahead of ourselves and imagine what the outcome of a situation will be, which is usually ten times worse than the actual reality of the situation. Phobias often begin with a sudden trigger, a minor or major traumatic event. A phobia can begin because of an unpleasant or frightening experience involving a particular object or situation. This situation generally occurs in childhood and persists through to adult remaining with the person almost as if it’s a part of them. While this can be - and often is - the reason for a person’s developing a phobia it isn’t the only way in which phobias begin. Often, people say that a phobia comes ‘out of the blue’ - it starts one day for no apparent reason and quickly grows into a major problem. This is, naturally, confusing, because the individual concerned has no idea why they have become phobic. So, can this be explained? Yes it can, though not necessarily simply. Perhaps there are latent fears in the mind that aren’t in the forefront initially, but become exposed later. As an example, let’s say in 7th grade, a boy is the popular kid in school. All the girls swoon over him, all the guys are his friends. He is teacher’s pet and a favorite with his friend’s parents. All this overt acceptance could instill in his mind a latent fear of rejection that he isn’t cognitively aware of: sort of a “too good to last” mentality. As an adult, he finds himself avoiding social situations and even relationships in an effort to protect his feelings and fend off the rejection he thinks might be coming. In fact, phobias don’t develop for no reason at all, they develop for no logical reason. A long period of severe stress, an unresolved childhood fear, an unrelieved frustration and an insoluble life problem can all lie behind the beginning of a phobia. What’s more, knowing the originating problem doesn’t always help because the phobia may bear little relation to it. Some people believe that phobias develop from the body’s natural desire to protect itself. Unconscious or emotional learning takes place to keep us safe. In primitive conditions when coming into contact with something dangerous, the mind/body would create the optimum state for survival - a panic attack. This type of learning is not of the intellectual or rational type. If you had to think, “Yes, I think this would be a good time to have a panic attack” our species would have died out long ago. This type of learning takes place at an emotional level so that the response can bypass the ‘thinking brain’ In the past, an immediate phobic response to a predatory or poisonous animal would have been exceedingly useful. We therefore evolved with the ability to become phobic. In today’s complex world however, this learning mechanism often works in an inappropriate way. Non-specific phobias can come about either through a ’spreading-out’ of panic attacks, or through a person’s levels of general anxiety becoming so high that panic is easily triggered whenever stress levels are raised even slightly. Phobias are very real to the people who are experiencing them and should not be taken lightly by those around the phobic. My own grandmother is deathly afraid of cats. We own two cats. While we might think her fear is silly - our cats are really cute - we still accommodate her when she visits by putting the cats away. Phobias have actually been around for years. Here are some interesting facts about phobias and people who suffered from them.

Treating Hair Loss is Less Painful with Online Pharmacies

October 23rd, 2008 by admin

Young people take their hair for granted. They like to shave their heads, grow it into dreadlocks, bleach it, dye it, tie it into knots, and braid it. Most of them never think about the possibility of one day not having hair on their head to express their individuality. But for a person who is an adult and experiencing the trauma of hair loss, they think about their hair all the time.
The shower drain is the coroner for dead hair. It takes your precious locks to their final resting place. A simple process like taking a shower can be quite a traumatic event for a person who is experiencing problems with thinning hair. There is nothing more painful than watching their hair float down the shower drain. They cannot help but wonder every time a hair goes down whether or not there will be a new one growing back in it’s place, or if the follicle that produced that hair will produce no more.

Most causes of baldness are hereditary. Androgenetic alopecia is the medical term for this type of hair loss which affects millions of men and women worldwide. The hair follicles progressively get smaller which causes a shortening of the growth cycle. As the hair growth cycle gets shorter it causes the hair to become thinner and shorter over time until there is eventually no growth at all.
In the old days people with hair loss problems had no treatments available. They had several choices to deal with this condition, and none of them were good ones. Comb the hair on the side over the top, shave your head, or wear a hat all the time to conceal the problem. Fortunately, things are different today. Advances in medical science have produced several effective products to help people who are going bald. But time is of the essence when it comes to hereditary hair loss. The sooner a person seeks help for this condition the better their chances are of re-growing hair or saving the hair they have left.
Men do not like to talk about hair loss. It is a sensitive topic that is avoided in conversations for the very reason that it makes them feel awkward and vulnerable. They would much rather deal with that issue in private. A quick consultation with a doctor to discuss the available treatments, and the rest of their problem will be handled on their own. After they discuss their options with the doctor, they usually end up with a trip to the local pharmacy to pick up drugs like Propecia, Rogaine, Minoxidil, etc… This is when the situation can get embarrassing.
When a man goes to the local pharmacy to pick up his products for the treatment of hair loss he is bringing his problem out into the public. There may be a good looking woman working behind the register and the last thing he wants to do is throw down a box of Minoxidil with a bottle full of Propecia pills. This would be a declaration of his thinning hair problem, and that is something he wants very few people to know about. There is also the chance that he might see someone he knows while standing in line. It could be Mrs. Krakowski the nosy neighbor, Bobby Tremmelfork the loudmouth mischievous kid who lives next door, or the worst possible person of all; an old girlfriend or ex-wife. These types of people will inevitably glance down at his products on the counter as they are waiting in line, and when this happens his problem with thinning hair is suddenly exposed to all the wrong people, and inevitably to the world (as he knows it). This kind of painful embarrassment can be quite unbearable for a man who is going bald, but it can be avoided entirely by foregoing the trip to the local pharmacy and opting to order the hair loss products from an online pharmacy.
Online pharmacies are safe, convenient and private. The Federal government has issued strict laws and guidelines regarding this industry and this has eliminated most of the risk from ordering prescription and over the counter drugs online. Also, the major search engine companies like Google and Yahoo now require anyone who advertises an online pharmacy using their services to provide proof of a valid U. S. pharmacy license. While all this means that it is quite safe to do your pharmacy shopping online, it also means that it is a lot less embarrassing to buy your prescription drugs. No more trips to the local pharmacy where you run the risk of exposing your sensitive medical condition to the world. You can now order your prescription and over the counter drugs safely and securely (any reputable online pharmacy has an SSL certificate) and have them delivered overnight right to your door in a plain-wrapped box. Even the good-looking FEDEX delivery woman will have no idea that the reason you answer the door every time wearing a baseball cap is because you have been suffering with the misery of androgenetic alopecia (hereditary baldness). And if Mrs. Krakowski your nosy neighbor looks through her window with binoculars to try and see the name on the packages your FEDEX person keeps delivering to your hose, her devious plan will be thwarted. Or if Bobby Tremmelfork happens to dig through your trash can to find a box that will serve as a home for the pet centipede he caught in his back yard, he and his family will not discover that you have been having products to treat thinning hair delivered to your house.
If you order your products to treat sensitive conditions at an online pharmacy your secret will remain safe. You will be able to attend all neighborhood gatherings in the future with the confidence that comes with knowing that nobody is aware of the emotional pain you were recently going through when you were losing your hair. Oh…and if you happen to run into an old girlfriend or ex-wife out in public some where, one thing is for sure; it will not be at your local pharmacy at a time when you are ordering prescription drugs to help with your thinning hair problem.

Although depression affects many people every year, it is certainly treatable. Don%26#8217;t let yourself succumb to it, fight it and win. Many people think that a person can just snap out of it, but the truth is, the chemical imbalance can only be treated with therapy and medicine.

Some people have more severe cases of depression than others. For mild cases, depression can be treated by simply talking about how you feel and about the things that affect a persons life. More advanced cases will need extensive therapy, hypnosis, or even medicine. It%26#8217;s always a good ideas to talk to your medical reactionary about the treatment options available to you.

Severe Depression

If you suffer from severe depression, then it will be hard for you to even get up in the morning. The symptoms you suffer become a physical illness. Depression is now being linked to genetics. Its not something that you can catch from others and it isn%26#8217;t something shameful. Everyone hits bottom sometimes, and sometimes you hit bottom harder than others. Depression can be from a traumatic event, hormones, change in health, illness, or drugs. There are many other reasons too, that might help to explain why w

omen are twice as likely to be depressed then men.

Depression Is Not Permanent

Keep in mind that depression should not be permanent. Even if you feel lost, there is help available. They may become violent and angered or they could become a mop and helpless. You can tell when some ones depressed because they begin to carry themselves differently. They will slouch, become indecisive, and will withdraw from close friends and family. Speaking with someone can go a long way.

Depression Is Normal

Believe it or not, but depression is actually quite normal. A person can be depressed without going all the way to suicide. Of course, most people who get depressed think about suicide at one point. This is when a person needs the most support. No matter how hard they will try to pull away from you, make sure that you let them know that you care about them. This is the only advice that friends and family should try. As for treatment, the person has to want to change their life before therapy and medicine will help. You are never out of reach for recovery. In fact, since depression is a state of mind, it is possible to change your outlook in as little as a week or two if your case is mild.

How does physical health affect mental health?

How does physical health affect mental health?
by Jennifer Baxt

Believe it or not, physical health can have a large influence on a persons mental health. In fact, it is found that people who are more active and more physically fit tend to be happier people overall. While this may not be true for everyone, good physical health can certainly increase the chances of better mental health. Does this mean that better physical health can cure depression? Not necessarily. There are many different types of depression and different people suffer depression for different reasons. Some depression is genetic, some is caused by a traumatic event and for others there does not to be any specific cause for the individual to be suffering from depression. Good physical health is just another way for someone to lesson the chances of falling into a depression. For some, more exercise can actually help them with their depression because it gets them more active and allows less time for dwelling on things that bother the person. In fact, some have deemed exercise as a natural antidepressant.

Viewing exercise as a natural antidepressant, one has to wonder how this would affect the mind. Apparently, studies have shown that exercising increases activity in the hippocampus and the frontal lobes, releases endorphins in the body, as well as possibly increases the production of certain types of neurotransmitters that improve a persons mood. Studies and research is still being done to further the understanding of how exercising and improving an individuals physical health can positively influence the state of their mental health. Besides looking at exercise as a natural antidepressant and looking at other reasons why being more fit can actually improve a persons outlook on their selves, one has to think about the many other benefits of exercising that can make a person happier overall. Exercise is a great way to reduce stress after a long day and difficult day. It also helps get the body into better physical condition that can make a person look and feel more attractive. It will also help to reduce chances of developing diseases, such as any number of heart problems, cancers or diabetes, which can have a negative impact on an individuals mental health.

The more one thinks about it, the more they realize that the physical state of their body can have an incredibly large impact on their mental state. A person who is not in good physical condition have a tendency to feel more self-conscious of their selves or even have less confidence in their selves. This example clearly shows how a persons physical health can impact either positively or negatively on a persons mental health. While exercise is a great way to try and improve mood, confidence and avoid depression, anyone experiencing depression should still contact a therapist. Online therapy is available for anyone who needs to talk to someone who can help them work through their depression. Exercise is a decent treatment for some, but an online therapist can also greatly increase the chances of an individual getting rid of their depression. Many people with depression who have seriously wanted to improve their lives and get out of their depression have consulted an online therapist. Online counseling is so effective that most people who consult an online counselor or therapist are successfully.

How do you parent a child with problem behavior?

October 19th, 2008 by admin

There are many families out there who have children who exhibit “bad” behavior. Few behavioral problems in children are a result of genetics or lack of intelligence. In fact, most behavioral problems are developed through the influence the children are exposed to. Children who appear to have difficulties in their behavior are usually reacting to their environment, difficulties in the family, problems at school or to a traumatic event they have suffered in the past, to name a few. In most cases, the “bad” behavior is a result of something; kids will usually have a reason for acting a certain way, though this fact is usually ignored.

During their younger years, children are incredibly impressionable. They rely on watching their older siblings, their parents, other kids at daycare and any other family they may have regular contact with to learn how to act. If the behavior around them is generally poor behavior, then the child may start to exhibit similar behavior because they think it is the way they are supposed to act. They are young and do not clearly understand that this poor behavior is unacceptable. At this point, it is up to the parent to make it clear that their behavior is unacceptable and then teach the child how they are suppose to behave. When this problem is ignored and the parent does not define the proper behavior from the start, then the child will continue to cling to their poor behavioral habits and these can become worse over time. If the parent decides later on that they need to change the poor behavior, it can be more difficult because the bad behavior has become integrated into the child’s personality and is how they have always behaved before.

There are some situations where the child may develop poor behavior in other ways instead of the influence by others. Parents are who the child relies on to learn proper behavior, so how the parent reinforces behavior will often have a direct impact on what the child learns to be acceptable or not. For example, a parent may think it is cute when a young child utters an unacceptable word and laughs instead of telling the child that saying such a thing is not acceptable. Laughing or saying “that was cute” will only encourage the child to do it again, not understanding that it is an unacceptable word to say out loud. Good discipline must be consistent or bad behavior may be encouraged. Of course, one must be careful when handing out punishment. Being too strict can have the negative effect on the child because they might develop resentment toward the parent. Rewarding good behavior, explaining to the child why something they have said and/or done is wrong and not being overly strict or harsh with punishment will all help in promoting good behavior, if a good balance is struck.

Knowing how to best encourage the right behavior from a child can be tricky, especially for first time parents. A family therapist can offer a lot of help in dealing with a child who appears to have some behavioral problems. The family therapist can speak with both the parents and the child and find out why the child might be behaving the way they are. The family therapist can then work with the parents and child to bring about the necessary changes in order to alter the bad behavior into good behavior. Online family therapists are also available for families who would prefer the convenience of communicating with a therapist online in their home.

How can a poor diet lead to depression?

October 19th, 2008 by admin

There are many causes of depression and thousands of people suffer from it every day throughout North America. While the cause of the depression for some is easily found, the cause is not so easily determined for others. Just about anything could be a possible cause, including environmental factors, biological factors or physical factors. Depression can be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, or it could be caused by a past traumatic event. Whatever the cause, research is still being done to further understand it, but there is help and treatment available for anyone who is suffering from depression and would like to get out of it.

While most will think about how the above mentioned factors are what can lead to depression, many will not think about how a poor diet can lead to depression. It is a physical influence on both the physical and mental health of a person. A person who does not have enough to eat will often be weakened both mentally and physically. A lack of food decreases the energy that a person has; it brings on fatigue, the inability to perform properly at school and work, or even sleep problems. The mind and body will often try to warn a person in different ways that they are not getting enough food; either by physical pains or mental exhaustion for the most part. A person who is constantly malnourished may start to feel down more often. Their blood sugar is low and this can cause them to lose energy, confidence and make them feel more frustrated and short tempered because they are lacking the food that they need in order to think clearly.

Who would be more prone to having a poor diet that does not give the body what it needs? People who have very busy lives and those who do not manage their time well will often have difficulty in keeping up with their regular meals. They will often eat on the go or on the run and the foods that they eat at this time are often high in sugar and carbohydrates that only fuel the body for a short period of time. People who are stressed, anxious or who have a dim view of themselves and their lives can all have poor diets. They focus more on eating foods that are easy to prepare in quick time, that taste good and will give them the energy that they need for that moment until the subsequent crash afterwards, when they will often go for the sugary treat or the energy drink to pick them up again.

Any online counselor or online therapist will say that good eating habits can help in keeping depression away. Making sure that one is having enough to eat of the right foods will often reduce the affects of stress and anxiety from their lives. People who don’t eat well and have a poor diet will be more open to suffering from depression. It is having enough of the right foods that keep the body balanced; without these foods the body can become imbalanced, including the chemicals in a person’s brain and this can lead to some form of depression.

Stress Due To Financial Problems | Content for Reprint

October 18th, 2008 by admin

You’ve checked your bank account and found you have only $42 left in your savings account. You’ve received at least three phone calls this morning from creditors who are wondering why your payments are late.Your car payment is due in three days and you’re not sure how you’ll pay the bill.Last month, your landlord threatened to evict you when your rent check did not arrive on the first of the month. If this scenario sounds familiar, you may be experiencing finance-induced stress. From time to time, all of us suffer from it, to one degree or another. Financial stress is simply a fact of modern life.No matter how hard we work, no matter how diligent we are at trying to save our money, we may find that we have great difficulty paying all of our bills. This can be particularly true if we’ve been hit with a major traumatic event, such as the death of a spouse, a divorce, or a serious illness. Financial stress can be felt in a number of ways. For example, you might have difficulty sleeping at night because you are worrying about your finances. You might find yourself short-tempered and, as a result, you might be experiencing conflict with your spouse. You may find yourself yelling at your children for minor infractions, or you may even be hit with panic attacks at work. The fact is, financial stress can cause you tremendous physical and psychological discomfort. It can lead to anxiety, depression, high blood pressure even stroke. As a result, financial stress is actually a serious, though often unrecognized, health concern. In essence, your financial problems may be making you sick. But how do you address what can seem to be an insurmountable problem? To begin with, it is important that you go to your doctor and have a complete physical. State your symptoms, and note that you believe that financial stress may be the cause.Your doctor might then refer you to a psychiatrist for anti-anxiety medication, or to a therapist who can help you work through your problems. Next, consider consulting a certified financial planner. He or she can help you to realize your short-term and long-term financial goals.Don’t be embarrassed to let the planner know the extent of your financial problems. Remember that the only way to really attack finance induced stress is to meet the difficulty head-on.Trying to dodge the problem pretending that things are not as bad as they are will only exacerbate your troubles in the end. Your financial planner will probably want you to come up with a workable budget. It is important to be realistic when crunching numbers. It does little good for you to come up with a budget that looks fine on paper, but that doesn’t work in the real world.Make sure that you budget for all the essentials food, shelter, clothing, medical care. And also try to budget for long-term priorities, such as college savings or retirement. Also, don’t forget to allot at least a small portion of your budget to recreation and entertainment. You’ll need a few diversions in order to be a less stressed individual. In the beginning, you might want to track every single expenditure that you make. This can be difficult, especially if you are not used to that kind of record keeping. But it can be quite instructive. You might not realize, for instance, just how much money you’re spending each month on lattes, or how much you are devoting to the daily lottery drawing.By doing the record-keeping, you might discover ways that you can trim your budget without really feeling the pinch. It is also highly important that you save a portion of your money in order to pay for the unexpected. From time to time, all of us are hit with bills that seem to come out of the blue.Your savings will act as a kind of insurance policy against disaster. With some money in the bank even if it is a small amount in the beginning you’ll be better able to weather the financial storms that come your way.And you might find those middle-of-the-night worries disappearing, knowing that you are doing all you can to get your finances under control.
