Most of the time we are not even aware of our low levels of concentration. We have become accustomed to a relatively low level of productivity in relation to the functioning of our mind/body. When my students take their first Awareness Meditation class they are often shocked as they observe how their mind functions, and it is not uncommon for them to feel physically uncomfortable as they open to this new experience. Try for a moment. Place your fingertips on your lower abdomen and image your breath being a balloon, filling and emptying. You might notice it is difficult to keep your concentration on the balloon.
The thought processes, like a busy parade moving through your head, are beckoning you to return and pay attention to them, even though they are passing through at a relatively high speed. Return your attention to the balloon, and notice how quickly you return to the mind chaos. You have a point of reference for our work.Step one is feeding the mind/body the proper nourishment for high level performance!Most of us never think twice about what we place in our mouths, or how the food chemicals are going to effect our thought processes. Food chemicals? Yes, foods are powerful chemicals and can be responsible for many problems, especially when considering concentration. We tend to over-consume sugars, chemicals, and other high glycemics that can greatly interfere with the mind/body functioning. If your family health history is positive for Profactor H diseases, you may be even more sensitive to these foods, and a change in nutrition could even turn your life around. We also need to be certain we are eating sufficiently for our lean body mass, so that we burn fat for proper oxygenation of the brain. A brain cannot function without necessary oxygen!
Step two is quieting the mind processes! When the goal is concentration, the mind must be trained to be quiet, so it can be refocused on whatever you plan to concentrate. The critical word here is %26quot;train.%26quot; An untrained mind is like a wild pony, running all over the place, and going nowhere in particular. Mind quieting exercises are meditative in nature, and include tools such as body scanning, awareness meditation, and other awareness techniques. We re-instruct the mind to release whatever is unnecessary at that moment, and return to the focus, usually the breath. We learn to fractionate these exercises during the day, keeping an eye out for the wild pony. The more we practice, the better we get, and our concentration improves quickly. We can pull upon these tools at any time, and we begin to have real control.
Step three is managing the emotional states!Emotions are chemically charged, and cause the over-production of stress hormones, thereby speeding up the mind/body processes and making it difficult to concentrate at any meaningful level. As we work on becoming aware of the arrival of emotions, we can release them while they are somewhat diminished, and often alone. As we become proficient, we can also learn to reframe, release and diminish more powerful emotions, freeing ourselves to go forward towards our goals.
Step four is opening ourselves to the power of the subconscious mind!
As we become more practiced in meditation tools, we spend more time at the alpha state. This is where the door to the subconscious is located. We enter our workshop and busy ourselves with tools for reprogramming, reframing, modifying past experiences, collecting resources, and getting needed advice from our inner resources. We learn how to focus on what needs to be changed, looking at it directly, and designing what we really want. Our inner resources are utilized in assisting us in action steps, and showing us the way towards our highest aspirations. Self-hypnosis is easy, fun and very powerful. To sceptics, hypnosis is mumbo-jumbo, but scientific evidence now shows that hypnosis and self-hypnosis can help people to overcome problems. It has can help people:

Of course, you must want to end these problems. During your normal mental state you may not be prepared to take the trouble needed to overcome the addiction - and may not admit it is an addiction - but if you ever think “I want to stop smoking” or drinking, etc, then there is a good chance that hypnosis will help.

How does it do so? Hypnotism - that is the act of being hypnotised - has been shown to alter the mental state. Different electrical signals are produced, and this has also been show with magnetic resonance imaging. However, it is not know exactly what occurs.

All that is known is that the state appears to be closer to sleeping with one exception - you remain completely alert. There are various theories. For example, it is known that there are two aspects of the brain: conscious and sub-conscious.

The conscious is used to work things out logically, and to take decisions about what to do next. The sub-conscious keeps us breathing, keeps our heart beating regularly, and sends out signals to our body to carry out all the routine operations needed to keep us alive.

But it is more than that: the sub-conscious also stores memories and information, and has ready access to these things - even when we have forgotten them. In some cases, the events just happened a long time ago, or were insignificant. In others, they were so uncomfortable that we don’t allow our conscious mind to remember them.

Theses forgotten memories can also result in repression, so that we don’t achieve what we want, or may make us do things we don’t really want to. The hypnotic state can make your subconscious see things differently, and overcome problems.

What happens with hypnosis? Some hypnotherapists induce a feeling of nausea that is associated with smoking or overeating, so that the next time we get a cigarette out, we don’t feel good. Another approach is to help the person have more determination to stop smoking.

Increased determination also helps us achieve our goals - goals that we thought were completely out of reach.

Personal problems such as phobias can be overcome with hypnosis, and pain in illness can be reduced - this has been demonstrated in various studies including one involving 80 children suffering from cancer. Overcoming the pain of childbirth is another example.

A group of people who suffered from hay-fever in Switzerland also found reduced symptoms following hypnosis. Half the group were treated this way in the first season, and compared with the others, and the other half of the group were treated prior to the second season. Afterwards, they reported that they needed less medication than before being hypnotised.

EEGs (electro-encephalographs) showed that the right-brain was more active and the left-brain less active during hypnosis. The left-brain is associated with analysis and criticism and the right-brain with creativity.

Self Hypnosis Simple Exercise To Stop Smoking Now, You Can Implement Today by Pradeep Aggarwal

You have to select a quiet, comfortable place to practice this exercise once you’ve chosen the place, you need to find a relaxed position. Some people prefer lying down, while others may chose to relax upright in a chair. It’s up to you.

After you’ve found your favorite spot, the lights are subdued, and you’ve settled into a comfortable lounge chair, close your eyes, take a deep breath, breathing in through your nose…hold it for three seconds…and slowly exhale through your mouth over a six-second period. Inhale…hold it…exhale…inhale…hold it…exhale. Do this for two minutes. Slow, deep, rhythmic breathing helps you to relax. Imagine your tensions flowing out of you with every bit of air you release.

In this tranquil state, you’re ready for your self-hypnosis induction, you’ve already finished the first: relaxation. The following script is the induction process, for stop smoking, finishing up with the awakening technique.

I suggest you tape record the script, or have someone with a calm and serene voice tape it for you, to be played back at each session.

Induction Process…

“You’re here to take a nap. You’re resting comfortably. You’re happy to do what you do when you take a nap…forget the rest of the world. Give up the world, and drift off to sleep without care or concern…There is no effort here, it’s just comfort and ease…

“There is no trying to take a nap. It’s just permission. Permit yourself some calmness, patience, pleasantness, and gentleness. Don’t try hard for these things. Permit them in a passing way…

“A second or two of calmness…a second or two of pleasantness…a second or two of gentleness…

“There is no effort or strain involved in these things. Give permission for calmness…give permission for patience…give permission for gentleness…give permission for gentle resolve to feel the feelings I describe to you…

“It’s a real good thing we do here today, so let us be pleasant in advance…be patient with me and with yourself…and I will be eternally patient with you…Be gently resolved to feel the feelings I describe to you…

“Those words, ‘gently resolved,’ are so soft, they’re like light’ puffy white clouds…”Also, I would like you to pretend and imagine and make believe. These are not false nor are they false feelings…

“I’m happy to tell you that from this moment on, you’ll never need to smoke again in your entire life…you cannot be bothered to smoke…It doesn’t matter now in what way you formerly smoked…if you smoked when you were driving…or after you ate…when you were on the phone…when you woke up…while you were reading…or at any time, that no longer applies…

You see, instead of the habit of smoking, you now have the good habit of not smoking…of a calmness and self-control whenever and wherever you need it…it doesn’t matter who offers you a cigarette or blows smoke in your face…you will not feel tempted or threatened, and you’ll respond with something like, ‘No thank you, I don’t smoke anymore,’ demonstrating that you now have control of your mind to make the decision and the will-power to carry it through…

“With each cigarette you no longer smoke, you’re more and more reinforced in your new habit not to smoke…Also there will be no substitution of any other habit on the physical level…you will not substitute eating for smoking… In fact, it is your desire to maintain your weight, or if you wish to lose weight, you’ll be able to do so even now…now that you’ve stopped your smoking…

“The same new-found willpower you have acquired in no longer wanting to smoke is there for you in dieting and proper eating…You’ll enjoy greater health in ways you may not expect to find…In a few days, your blood will clear and the effects of nicotine will be mainly gone…over a period of weeks and even months, the tars in your lungs will gradually diminish and leave your body…you will enjoy an energy level of unbelievable proportion…

“This is true because you will no longer be inhaling carbon monoxide from cigarettes.
