Few areas of medical research are generating as much interest as stem cells. There are several reasons why they are receiving so much scientific attention. They are able to divide into copies of themselves. They’re unspecialized. And they can produce other cell types.

Unlike other cell types, stem cells can divide into identical copies of themselves, and can do so for the life of the organism. Other specialized cell types are unable to do this. When they are damaged they cannot create replacement cells of the same type.

Stem cells are unspecialized. They don’t have tissue-specific functions or properties like red blood cells or nerve cells. They can’t oxygenate the body or make parts of it move or carry nerve impulses. They can however through a process called differentiation, divide and produce or give rise to other specialized cell types (blood cells, heart muscle cells, etc.)

Of great interest to scientists is the ability of stem cells to replicate many times over (proliferate), and remain unspecialized until called upon to differentiate into a specific cell type for repair of the body. Understanding this process is key to controlling the differentiation process and growing specific cells for, among other things, cell-based therapies.

A large part of the research effort is on the ability of stem cells to replace damaged cells in the body. As stem cells can, under the right conditions, be induced to become other cell types, they may be used to replace cells damaged or lost to injury or disease. It’s thought that there is the potential to produce, through continued research, cures for diseases such as Parkinson’s and diabetes, or to repair devastating injuries to the spinal cord.

Stem cells come in two varieties. The type that can differentiate into any adult cell type (pluripotent), or those that are limited in the types they can become (multipotent). Pluripotent stem cells are found in very early development organisms and multipotent stem cells among differentiated cells of the body.

The pluripotent cells used in research are derived from mammalian embryos in the very early stages of development (4-6 days old). Human embryos for stem cell research are those that are the result of in-vitro fertilization and donated, they are not from intra-uterine fertilization. These embryonic stem cells can potentially become each (more than 200) of the bodies cell types.

This ability to produce other cell types makes them a source for regenerative medicine and tissue replacement therapies. Though no treatments have been derived from embryonic stem cells yet, this is not unusual for any early research field so it’s still very promising.

Multipotent stem cells are found throughout the various tissue types of the body including cord blood. Though unspecialized, they can only produce cells of they type in which they are found. They repair and maintain those types of cells. Blood forming adult stem cells in the bone marrow repair and replace blood cell types like red blood cells and white blood cells and platelets. Retinal stem cells only replace and repair the retina. While it was generally believed that multipotent cells can only produce a limited number of different cells, recent research seems to indicate that they may not be as limited as previously thought.

Because stem cells can repair and replace damaged tissues, they are considered to be important to regenerative medicine (growing and replacing damaged tissue, or making natural healing work faster). Understandably there is a great deal of work being done in this area.

Stem cell research has given hope to many suffering from untreatable or incurable diseases and injuries that an answer to their health issues may be on the horizon. While these new therapies may be years away, science is making steady progress in understanding the process that make stem cells so promising. One can only be encouraged by the progress made so far and hopeful that all of the optimistic projections are realized.

A lot has been said, and written, about fish, fish oil capsules, and Omega-3 fats when it comes to heart disease. However, the never ending questions are: what is better for my heart, fish or fish oil capsules? Can I replace fish with fish oil capsules and obtain the same health benefits? Well, here is the answer.

The American Heart Association and several other groups recommend Omega-3s, the main fat found in fish and fish oil capsules, to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, there has been little research on whether the body processes fats from fish oil capsules and fish in the same way. To investigate the matter, Dr. Harris, from the University of South Dakota and his team had a group of 11 women eat two servings of tuna or salmon each week, while another group of 12 women took the same amount of omega-3s, an estimated 485 milligrams daily, in capsule form.

After 16 weeks, the amount of omega-3 fatty acids in the red blood cells of women in both groups had risen by 40 percent to 50 percent, while omega-3s in the plasma, the liquid portion of the blood, had risen by 60 percent to 80 percent.

We went into the project assuming that fish would be better, based on some previous literature from other studies, Dr. Harris indicated. Based on the current findings, it doesnt make any difference whether we get our omega 3 fatty acids from a concentrate in a fish oil capsule or in fish they have the same effect as far as enriching our tissues with omega 3s.

Nevertheless, Dr. Harris emphasized that he would encourage people to eat fish rather than relying on fish oil capsules. Fish contributes proteins, vitamins, and minerals to our diet that the fish oil capsules dont bring.

Benefits of Omega-3s for the Heart

Improved heart rhythms

Uncontrolled heart rhythms are responsible for nearly half of all cardiac mortality. By affecting the electrical activity of the heart, Omega-3s from fish help maintain stable heart rhythms.

Improved heart rate

Heart rate is the number of beats your heart pumps per minute at rest. Heart rate is lower in people who are physically fit and higher in the obese. Normal heart rate is between 60 and 80 beats per minute and usually increases with age. Consumption of marine omega-3s is associated with lowering heart rate, a condition that lowers the chance of heart attacks.

Some blood clotting is essential for life, but an excessive tendency towards clotting increases the risk of blocked arteries. Omega-3s do not pose a serious risk to blood clotting unless a person consumes very large amounts of them (roughly 10 grams a day) or is already taking blood thinners (anti-coagulants) and consuming large amounts of omega-3s

Less inflammation

Although we can not notice it, low-level inflammation of the blood vessels is linked to heart disease and impaired blood vessel function. High levels of the protein CRP in the blood are linked to the inflammation observed in heart disease. Some studies have reported that consumption of omega-3s reduces CRP in people with heart disease. Omega-3s are well known for their anti-inflammatory properties.

Final thoughts

Remember that although fish and fish oil capsules can provide the same benefit as far as Omega-3 fats is concerned, eating fish will contribute to much more than just Omega-3s. Fish, whether fresh, frozen or canned, will provide you with iron, needed to prevent anemia; phosphorus, needed for the brain; iodine for the thyroid; as well as good quality protein. Best source of Omega-3s from fish: salmon, mackerel, tuna, sardines, and trout. If you do not have a heart condition, 2 or 3 portions of fish a week will contribute with the needed omega-3s, 2 grams a week.

If you already have had a cardiovascular episode, you can add some capsules of fish oil to your diet. Do not exceed 1 gram a day of Omega-3s.

Necrotizing enterocolitis is the death of intestinal tissue. The illness is most common among premature newborns. Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) occurs in approximately 25,000 babies per year. Many newborns who develop necrotizing enterocolitis survive and go on to live healthy lives. But if the infection becomes severe, it can cause serious damage to or holes in the intestinal tissue. NEC typically occurs within the first 2 weeks of life, usually after milk feeding has begun (at first, feedings are usually given through a tube that goes directly to the baby’s stomach).

The consequence of necrotizing enterocolitis is not clear. It is believed to occur when the immune and digestive systems do not grow properly. This can happen when a baby is born prematurely or when there are complications during pregnancy or delivery. Bacteria in the intestine may also be a result. In the most severe cases, necrotizing enterocolitis can be fatal. Necrotizing Enterocolitis is equally affected both male and female. Babies with too many red blood cells in the circulation are at an increased risk of developing NEC. This thickens the blood and makes oxygen transport more difficult.

Babies with gastrointestinal infections are at an increased risk of developing NEC. Babies who have had a difficult delivery or lowered oxygen levels are at an enlarged risk for developing NEC. A baby’s symptoms depend on how severe the condition is. The primary symptoms vary and may involve feeding intolerance, abdominal distension, bloody stools, apnea, lethargy, temperature instability or hypoperfusion. In newborns who have mild to moderate necrotizing enterocolitis, treatment consists of intravenous (IV) feeding, antibiotics, and removing extra fluids. Intravenous fluids are given to maintain hydration.

About 70% of newborns with necrotizing enterocolitis do not require surgery. If the intestine perforates, then surgery is needed. Surgery may also be required if the condition progressively worsens despite treatment. Pharmacologic therapy includes agents to treat the developing disease and those to provide supportive and symptomatic relief. Different antibiotic regimens can be used; one frequently used regimen includes vancomycin, cefotaxime, and clindamycin or metronidazole. This combination provides broad gram-positive coverage, excellent gram-negative coverage (with the exception of pseudomonads), and anaerobic coverage.
