Are Salon Treatments Safe During Pregnancy?

Author Name: Cyndra Neal Are Salon Treatments Safe During Pregnancy? There is nothing like a new haircut or hair color, or pedicure and manicure to make you feel like a new woman. Especially when a pregnancy can leave you feeling tired and changing hormones can make you feel not quite yourself. But are these treatments safe for your developing baby? Exposure to certain environmental agents called teratogens during pregnancy can cause birth defects. Experts are divided on how much exposure is too much but at this time there are no proven risks for most salon visits and there are many things you can do to help minimize any potential problems.NailsReducing your exposure to fumes is the most important thing you can do when getting a manicure. Ask your manicurist to do your nails in a well ventilated area and ask her to tightly cap all solvent bottles. Your nail polish should be formaldehyde and toluene free if possible. There is a small risk of blood-borne infections such as HIV or hepatitis being transferred by non-sterile equipment through nicks in the cuticle. When getting acrylic nails, make sure your nail technician is careful about minimizing the skin contact with the liquids used. Be most careful when in the first trimester.PedicuresPedicure massages, especially when focused on reflex points on the feet can trigger labor. Avoid any kind of foot massage during the first trimester. Also avoid ankle massages even during the second and third trimester. Blood clots are six times more common in pregnant women. Foot and leg massages can dislodge clots if the pressure of the massage is too deep. The temperature of your foot bath should not be too hot. Again, your polish should be formaldehyde and toluene free if possible.Essential OilsSome essential oils known as emmenagogues can encourage menstruation and should be avoided during the first trimester. You might want to be on the safe side and just get your hair frosted, highlighted or streaked where there is minimal contact with your scalp. Be wary of natural dyes that can still contain synthetic chemicals. Pure vegetable henna can be an alternative but not everybody will want a red-orange hue. If you do choose to have your hair dyed, be aware that changing hormones can affect the way the dye affects your hair color.Tanning BedsYou should definitely pass on this salon treatment. Excessive heat exposure is dangerous for your pregnancy and over exposure to UV light can interfere with your immune system. There are salons and day spas that cater exclusively to pregnant women. Nails Tools Kit - Assembling a Nail Tool Kit

Nails Tools Kit - Assembling a Nail Tool Kit

Cuticle pushersRepeat after me: I will not buy or use metal cuticle pushers! Metal cuticle pushers can damage cuticles and lead to infection! Instead, go with orangewood or birchwood sticks, which are gentler. You can find these wood sticks in drugstores or nail salons. When using a cuticle pusher, work gingerly You don’t want to shove the cuticle so far back that it disappears into the nail fold. You also don’t want to remove the cuticle outright. Your goal is to clear any bit of skin that has crept onto the nail plate. Do this by shimmying cuticles back toward the area where the nail fold and nail plate meet. Here’s a surprising fact: The nail polish we use today is a reftned version of car paint.NailbrushesA nailbrush is a great thing to have. You can use it to scrub away dirt, clean off oily vestiges of cuticle cream or hand lotion, rub away callused or dry foot skin, and even to gently nudge back cuticles. A nailbrush needn’t be expensive; all you need is something that feels comfortable in your hand and that features slightly flexible plastic or natural boar bristles.A tip on choosing a nailbrush: Bristles that are too soft don’t have enough resistance to work well, while bristles that are too stiff can damage the skin under and around nailsBuffersBuffers are used on bare fingernails, bare toenails, and polish-coated nails. These tools usually come in the form of a rectangular block or a two-sided board, with a different strength of buffer on each of the block’s or board’s sides. The buffing material can be fiberglass, rubber, fine-grit sandpaper, chamois, or even leather. Here’s the origin of that pink glow that appears when you buff your nails: buffing removes the top layers of the nail plate, which in turn makes the nail more translucent. You also generate heat by way of friction. This heat encourages blood to flow to the nail bed’s surface. The newly thinned nail plate makes it easier to see the blood below.A buffer is not an essential piece of nail-care equipment. If you decide you can’t possibly live without a buffer, go ahead and get one - I don’t recommend using it on pose fingernails, where it can cause thinning of the nail plate. Buffers are best used on bare toenails (which are thicker than fingernails) or to give a gleaming finish between manicures to polished fingernails and toenails.ClippersClippers are handy for large jobs, such as eliminating a half-inch worth of fingernail (either real or fake) or shortening toenails which, because of their thickness, don’t yield easily to nail files. They’re also good for trimming hangnails. The most important quality in a pair of clippers? Sharpness. Depending on the brand of clippers, what you use them for, and how often they are used, a pair should remain sharp anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. If you notice that your clippers have lost their edge, head to a drugstore or nail salon and buy yourself a new pair. Your nails will thank you.

How to Airbrush Nails?

All women enjoy having their nails beautiful. Anyway, going to a salon can get a little bit expensive. For learning to airbrush nails on your own, you can save money or if you are lucky maybe even make some money from this.Things Youll Need to airbrush nails on your own:First of all youll need acetone and a nail stencil. You will also need some nail polish (you will need minimum 2 diferent colors), an Airbrush gun will be very useful and a topcoat nail varnish to finish. How is done:If you dont have yet a nail stencil you can buy from a supply store. This kind of stores have lots of stencils. If you are wondering what kind of nail stencil to buy we recomand you purcase a simple but very eficient design such as a plain line when you first airbrush nails. You may use polish remover - acetone and gently wash your hands before starting the procedure - thats eliminate any kind of oil or old polish from your nails becouse if your nails arent perfect clean the the airbrush design will not last so long as you wish. You must apply a basecoat to your nails. When this basecoat is perfect dry you can apply wich color do you want or have for coloring the nails - this color will be the background color. Now you will position the stencil on top of you nail in the position you want to make the design. After this you will may use an airbrush gun to paint over the stencil with the color youve chosen for your design. For the last touch you can remove with acetone any over spray near your design. You can brush on a long-lasting topcoat and let your nails dry and remember to let them dry without touching anything; of course if you posses a professional nail dryer you can use it.After all this steps are done you can declare yourself a little specialist and in the future you can use and experiment with more elaborate stencils. You if are a little scared to start doing this procedure on your own you cand buy from a store synthetic hands or even fingers to experiment on them before starting to airbrush your real nails.

Stop Nail Biting

Nailbiting, can be unattractive, annoying, and damage their teeth. Parents all over the world worrys about their childrens bad habits and they are also tring to convince their child not to do this anymore. Also, parents often punish their children for biting their nails. There are much effective ways to help your child stop biting his nails. You should teach your child to crochet or knit. When they are occupied with creating things out of yarn, they will not remember to bite their nails, and their hands will be too occupied to do something else.Give children lots of toys to play with. Play games with them, games that are keeping them far from biting their fingernails. As you know, children are very creative so harness their nervous energy.Take your child to get a professional manicure. This procedure is sometimes a good one; its easier to stop nail biting when your fingernails look really good and nice. At the very least, it can be excellent mother-daughter bonding time! Dont you think?Use bitter nail polish. You can find it at almost drugstores. This nail polish is clear and also a litte bitter, so that once the fingernails go in the mouth, the child (or even adult!) tastes a very unpleasant flavor (but harmless), reminding them not to do it again ever.Do not punish your children for nail biting.Children find it not easy to stop a habit, just like adults, even if they are aware that it is a bad habit. You can use some encouragement and compassion, rather than harsh and difficult punishments. If you are worried you should take your child to the doctor .If the nail biting seems like a sign of a high level of anxiety, you should talk to your child, and take him/her to the doctor if you think you need help.

How to Look Amazing on a Budget

October 16th, 2008 by admin

Times are tough, companies are going out of business, the country is in a recession, hours are being cut, and gas and food prices are soaring.  So, how do us girls try to look glam with little or no extra money?  Our monthly budgets need to be cut somewhere and unfortunately sometimes it has to be the beauty budget.  There is no need to worry, read on for some tips tried and true from yours truly to help you get started.

It seems easy enough just to neglect your usual beauty maintenance routine, but one thing you do not want to let go by the wayside is your hair color.  Instead of going to the salon, you can buy hair dye at a drug store for a fraction of the price.  Just be sure to follow the instructions carefully to ensure correct coloring and avoid dark patches.  A good color can brighten your complexion, make you look younger, and give your hair a healthy look and feel.

There are many ways you can cut back on beauty expenses.  Shaving is the least expensive way to remove unattractive body hair.  Buy men’s razors and shaving cream which are usually priced lower than women’s.  You can find microwavable wax kits for about $10, decent tweezers are not expensive.  False eyelashes can be found for less than $5.  Splurge on conditioner, not shampoo but is you’re a swimmer use a clarifying shampoo or wash it twice.

People also don’t want to see sorry looking nails so do yourself and everyone else a favor by investing in a do-it-yourself home manicure kit.  They can be found nationwide at stores for $5 which is very reasonable compared to going to a nail salon.  You might even find that you can do a more thorough job on your nails than a professional technician would.  I know a few people who have actually gotten nail infections and funguses from nail salons due to unsanitary practices. Also, there is no difference between a $9 bottle of nail polish than a $.99 bottle except the packaging itself.

Daily exercise leaves your skin glowing.  You might think that you have to throw away your gym membership, which might be true if it’s too expensive.  Find cheap group exercise classes in your area by looking online.  Most yoga studios offer the first class free or discounted class packages.  Health clubs and gyms also offer one week free trial periods, but most will pressure you into becoming a member.  If you do like the gym and the price is right try to negotiate terms and avoid initiation fees.  The YMCA is usually less expensive and it may be what you’re looking for.  Lastly, walking and push ups are free so there is no need to neglect your physical well being.

You don’t have to pay top price for clothes to look good on you.  Check out thrift stores to find stuff that flatters your figure.  I bought a $5 pair of jeans at a second hand store once and received compliments every time I wore them.  It doesn’t matter where you shop, even discount marts might unexpectedly make clothes that fit you like a glove. So, always keep your eye out, say no to trends and personalize your style.

Tips For Keeping Your Hands Looking Beautiful

October 13th, 2008 by admin

We wave them in greetings, we raise them in class. We fling them all around while we’re talking to each other. With all this attention called to them, we should keep our hands looking nice and neat! Some people think keeping their hands smooth and nails trimmed is a lot of work, when in fact, it’s not. A simple lotion applied daily or trimming nails back once a week doesn’t take much time or effort. But sometimes, that isn’t quite enough. Sometimes we run into problem areas. Here are some common manicure problems, and their solutions.

If your nails keep splitting, it could be because you’re lacking protein. Try adding foods like cucumbers or nuts to your diet. Vitamin A and gelatin are essential for nail strength. Vitamin A is found in carrots, liver and peas. Gelatin can be found in Jell-o.

Sometimes we notice a strange yellow tinge to our nails. Don’t panic! It can be something as simple as staining from nail polish. If that’s the case, you can use a polish remover with lemon juice. It bleaches the color out. If that doesn’t work, it may be a fungus. This can be cured by using an over the counter cream, or even asking your doctor what he or she recommends.

If you notice frequent hang nails, try using a good moisturizing hand lotion. Hang nails often stem from dry nails, but can also result from chewing, or biting your nails. If you’re a biter, you may want to consider trying some of the nail polish that has an ingredient that makes your nails taste bitter. It will definitely deter you from putting your nails in your mouth. Yuck!

When you are removing several layers of polish, use a cotton ball that has been moistened with nail polish remover. They work better than tissues, as they hold a lot of remover, and are small and easy to maneuver.

Place the cotton on your nail, and hold it there for a few seconds. It will soften the layers of old polish, so it won’t take much effort swiping it off.

When you polish your nails, you want to steer clear of chipping for as long as you can. I know it is next to impossible to avoid. But if you apply your topcoat under the free edge, and across the tip as well, your polish will be extra protected.

Set up a soak for your hands. Use your favorite bath moisturizer in a small bowl filled with warm water. Don’t get it too hot, though. It will dry your hands and nails, and that defeats the purpose! Soak each hand for a few minutes, massaging your nails and cuticles, then gently dry with a soft towel. Now would be a good time for some wonderful lotion.

Oh no! You snagged your nail, and guess who doesn’t have a nail file? Don’t sweat it! Use the striker from any matchbook for a quick fix! And keeping a file in your car isn’t a bad idea, either.

If you accidentally get polish on your cuticle, or anywhere else for that matter, it’s OK. If you are pressed for time, dipping a cotton swab in polish remover, and swiping it away will work. But if you are just lounging at home, chill out! Polish will wash off the next time you wash your hands, or do a sink load of dishes.

Don’t have any of those fancy tip guides for a French manicure? Use transparent tape. It works just as well, and since most of us have some anyway, it will save some money. And who doesn’t want to do that, right?
