As consumers, we often believe what we read. And although we’ve become more aware of the foods we eat and the water we drink, we tend not to consider what is included in other products that make up our daily regimes. We are drawn to those labeled ‘natural’ as a better, healthier alternative. But do you know what ingredients are included in these products? Do you know the potential risks to your health and that of your family of these ingredients? Look beyond the pretty packaging, the catchy, popular phrase and you’ll be more than a little surprised. In fact, you are likely to be as shocked as I when I began researching ingredients of products that I had been using for years and discovered, for example, that my natural lipstick contains…hold on…lead?! Yep. Lead, in lipstick. What came from years of research was a resolve to learn the names of those ingredients which are proven to be harmful. You know the ones: those six syllable words impossible to pronounce? I’ve become an avid label reader of everything; in my opinion it’s worth the time to learn what the ingredients are and what they actually do to the body. I also started a campaign of letter writing to companies asking why they include ingredients in their manufacturing that have been proven to jeopardize the health of their customers. The replies were mostly defensive and protective of their oh-so-important marketing image. Some even offered free product! This was more than a little upsetting. After getting over the initial shock, I became infuriated with the fact that I had come to trust companies that cared about little more than their profit margin. Skin care products that I grew up with and those whose marketing image projected benefits to my skin, my hair, my body and purchased at the higher-end cosmetic counters, I discovered, included toxic ingredients or, at minimum, not so natural. Did you know that American companies manufacturing personal care products, including skin care products, can include almost any ingredient and that the US government does not require safety tests? I kid you not. The FDA website states: “The regulatory requirements governing the sale of cosmetics are not as stringent as those that apply to other FDA-regulated products… Manufacturers may use any ingredient or raw material, except for color additives and a few prohibited substances, to market a product without a government review or approval.” Over the years I have expanded my research to bottled waters, perceived health foods (cereal!), over-the-counter vitamin and supplements. What I discovered is that much of what is produced for mass consumption harbors negative components, many with serious health risks. Even those listed as natural. No wonder there’s so much illness and disease; we are definitely what we ingest and, just as alarming, what we place on our skin. But there is good news associated with all this sobering reality and that is this: there are companies operating with a good conscience and a strong commitment to utilizing only healthy, beneficial ingredients into their manufacturing be it natural skin care, vitamin or supplements. These particular products might not be sitting on the shelves of your favorite department, grocery or drug store, but they are available. What are something that can happen to me if am overweight? If you are over weight there is many things that can happen to you. Obesity is responsible for heart attacks. Obesity is behind sleep apnea, strokes, diabetes and so on. When a person is overweight, they often hurt all the time. Sometimes it makes it difficult to breath. Obesity causes the heart to work harder. You may have a hard time walking across the floor. Obesity can make you feel depressed and not want to go anywhere or do anything. Being over weight is bad on your health. What can I do to help myself? You have several options, yet the first is to gain willpower to take control of your body. The next step is to start eating the right foods, getting some exercise and so on. If you can exercise like you want to that is great, take it slow and do a little at a time. Do not overdo it. If you over work your body, the body will let you know. Obesity prevents many from staying active. A persons emotions and mental state is affected by obesity, since you start thinking I don’t want to do anything. You have to do something. Get out of the house and take in a movie. Perhaps you could visit some friends that you haven’t seen in awhile. The more active you are, you will start feeling better about you and maybe you will lose some weight. You need to go see your family doctor to see if its ok to do this before you start. Your family doctor may give you a diet to go by and maybe recommend the exercises that will benefit you. What should I eat? I cannot tell you what to eat. I can however give you a few pointers. Instead of frying your food, bake it. Baking meats, veggies, etc will help cutback grease. Baking will help drain the fat out of the food rather than if you fried the food. Fried foods mean fat, fat, fat and can harm your heart. Eat three times a day breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Eat plenty of raw vegetables, and salads. If you enjoy chocolates or sweets, find substitutes. Yogurts may offer you a new taste as well as reduce your risks, especially if you choose the fat-free groups. Try to stay away from fast foods. Fast food has obesity written all over its menu. Heart attacks follow. If you enjoy dining out, then find family owned restaurants, since the family will serve you healthier dishes. When you sit down to eat at home, avoid eating in front of the television. You should avoid seconds as well. Being over weight is hard on you both mentally and physical. If you have, will power then try to lose weight? Start out by taking it slow. Don’t go hog wild since it will only make your heart race. From as far back as I can remember there have been special church occasions when dinner on the church grounds was the order for the day. Far too many times I watched as person after person walked in with store purchased fried chicken. Whether the reason for this was lack of time, lack of planning, or lack of ideas I was never quite certain. I was certain however, that this was not isolated to my church alone. It may seem odd but I have traveled all over the country and lived in many different areas of the culture. One thing that seems constant no matter where I live is that someone inevitably brings fried chicken from a local restaurant or deli as his or her potluck offering. There is nothing wrong with this of course, but there are so many great recipes available for Sunday dinner cooking that it seems odd that so many would resort to this tired old tradition rather than spicing things up with a spicy taco casserole or sweetening the deal with some delightfully delicious and simple to make dessert. Sunday dinners obviously aren’t the only time when cooking a casserole or making a dessert is a good decision for the day. They are, however, the most common from my childhood, which is why I often refer to them. There are also ‘pitch ins’ at work that require a contribution and these are an excellent opportunity to make coworkers envy your culinary talents. Even for those who are health conscious however, there are many wonderful types of salads that can be prepared for occasions such as this that will provide you with a guilt free entrée at the event for which you are preparing your offering. You do not have to choose calorie or fat filled dishes for your Sunday dinner cooking. In fact, when you are doing the cooking you should cook the things you enjoy eating. Most of us are much more likely to put our best efforts into preparing the foods we enjoy rather than those that feel as though they are a chore for us to make. The same holds true when cooking for potlucks and such. Just be careful that you do not prepare the exact same dish every time or people will think that it is the only dish you can prepare. I recommend checking out casserole recipes online and in your favorite magazines. Even magazines that offer healthier eating options often have a casserole, large salad, or even a healthy dessert you can prepare for these events. My personal solution has always been to collect recipes over time that I would like to try out and use the potluck audience as my recipe guinea pigs. This way if my family or I do not like it, we won’t be stuck with leftovers for a week and if we do like it, we can put it into our rotation of recipes for use at home. Sunday dinner cooking doesn’t have to be nearly as stressful as many of us make it out to be. Many wonderful crock-pot recipes can actually be prepared while you sleep. Just load your slow cooker with the proper ingredients and turn it on before turning in. You should awaken to the wonderful aroma of whatever delightful dish you have prepared and still manage to get ready for church in record time. This tried and true technique is a great way to make Sunday dinner cooking quick and easy. Even if you are one of the many who have very limited culinary talents it is quite possible to wow your friends, relatives, and fellow church members with the correct ’simple to make’ recipe. Desserts are by far the best way to go in this effort and can also be made the night before (in many cases) and stored in the refrigerator.
