It’s all over the news, ADHD is everywhere. Kids have it in record numbers, adults have it too. Is ADHD the latest craze? Is ADHD real or is it just an excuse? What is ADHD anyway?

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It is commonly referred to as ADHD, ADD, AD/HD or Attention Deficit Disorder. It is estimated that 17-20 million Americans are affected by ADHD.

When most people hear the term “ADHD” or “ADD” they picture a child, usually a boy, bouncing off the walls. They picture a little boy who is unable to pay attention to what he is supposed to and is disruptive in class. They picture someone who is totally disorganized, always running late and always forgetting the one thing they were supposed to bring with them.

In reality these children (and as they grow up, these adults) have brains that work differently. The brain of someone with ADHD is simply not wired to handle boring or routine tasks. The brain of someone with ADHD needs excitement to keep it alert. The brain of someone with ADHD can’t spend the time to prioritize what they need to focus on. The ADHD brain focuses on the most interesting thing it can find. And, unfortunately, just because something is interesting does not mean it is the most important thing.

ADHD is characterized as having chronic difficulties in at least one three areas; attention, (hyper) activity, and impulsivity.

• Attention: People that have trouble focusing on the task at hand. People who day dream, people whose mind jumps from one topic to the next. Conversely, issues with attention also include people who hyperfocus on something that really excites or interests them ‘ think of a child who can’t pull themselves away from a good game they are playing or an adult who gets so wrapped up in a project at work that they “forget” to eat or don’t hear the phone.

• Activity: Can’t physically sit still, always plays with something in their hands, constantly fidgeting. Again here the converse exists, someone who is so lethargic that they can’t seem to get out of their own way. Hyperactivity also exists in thoughts. A person whose thoughts skip from one topic to the next.

• Impulsivity: The inability to plan. This is the person who just jumps right in without thinking the action through. The child who blurts out the answer in class or interrupts their friends while they are in the middle of something. These are people who start one project and jump to the next.

Children with ADHD often have a great deal of trouble in school. The school environment generally requires active kids to keep still and keep their hands to themselves. They are asked to focus on tasks and subjects that they may not be interested in and are asked to wait their turn before speaking. Many ADHD children spend their time in school hearing things like “if only you tried harder you’d do so well”, “you’re being lazy”, “just do it, it’s not so hard” or “you are not working up to your potential”.

When not recognized, ADHD frequently leads to frustration, underachievement and forgotten dreams. ADHD can lead to low self esteem and under use of potential. It can lead to underemployment, substance abuse and failed relationships. But this doesn’t have to be the case.

What we often don’t think of, or don’t realize, when we think about people with ADHD is that they are often the brightest amongst us. They tend to come up with the most and best ideas when brainstorming, they are likely to volunteer for the new project that nobody else will dare to.

People with ADHD often thrive in situation where they have many things going on at one time…they rule the multitask world. Some of our countries greatest thinkers have many ADHD traits. Think of Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein. Edison was kicked out of school because his teachers thought he was a slow learner, would not pay attention and could not sit still. Many people with ADHD are very smart. They are extremely creative, out of the box thinkers. They understand subjects on a different level than their peers. Their brain jumps from one idea to the next so they are often awesome barnstormers, negotiators and problem solvers. But they do learn differently and that is not always acceptable in the mainstream.

An ADHD child often grows up into an ADHD adult. By adulthood the ADHD adult has usually learned many strategies to help them compensate for some of the things they have trouble with. The attention, impulsivity and activity issues are still there but frequently show up in other ways. Major characteristics of ADHD in an adult include some of the following:

• Has difficulty sustaining attention, is easily distracted and fails to give close attention to detail.

• Does not appear to listen

• Struggles to follow through on instructions or follow rules

• Has difficulty with organization

• Avoids or dislikes tasks requiring sustained mental effort

• Talks excessively and may interrupts or intrudes upon others

• Procrastination; inability to complete things

• Has difficulty making decisions

• Difficulty expressing thoughts in speech or in writing

• A sense of failure; not living up to one’s potential

• A sense of being different, unconventional

• A sense of internal restlessness; constantly active ‘ like being driven by a motor

• Has trouble falling asleep or waking up alert

• A sense that their mind is always active; thoughts jump from one topic to the next

• Easily bored; intense need for excitement

• Very impatient; low frustration tolerance

• Difficulty with personal or work relationships

• Frequently late or rushed

• Impulsive spending and money management problems

• Frequently changing jobs, interests or activities

• Frequently losing or misplacing things

• Perfectionist tendencies

It is important to be aware that everyone at some time displays some if not all of the typical characteristics associated with ADHD. The difference is that with ADHD these characteristics are long lasting and control your life. ADHD symptoms usually arise in early childhood. Hybrid Training Article - Health Articles

I have written in the past about the need to regularly change your program variables (every 2 -3 weeks) including:

Repetitions ‘ number of times you complete the movement

Sets ‘ a group of repetitions together

Time under tension (eccentric - lowering phase/concentric ‘ lifting phase/ isometric ‘ holding weight statically)

Intensity

Speed of movement

Exercise type

Exercise order

Today I want to share with you an exciting alternative called hybrid training to spice up your workouts. These are more advance techniques and as always form is essential. So if you are new to training I recommend a postural and movement assessment to determine if you have any imbalances that need to be first addressed and corrected. Additionally being already familiar with the single exercises (e.g. bench press, bicep curl etc) is a prerequisite. Many experienced gym users may be familiar with some of these techniques, possibly giving them another name.

The term Hybrid Training was coined by Dr. Mel Siff, a leading trainer who began using it with his athletes, then bodybuilding clients, then everyday gym users with equal success. Hybrid Training combines two or more separate movements with a single weight or item of apparatus in one exercise. Hybrid exercises involve several joints of the body moving through a greater range of motion than is normal with single exercises (1).

Hybrid Training offers the following advantages: · Greater variety of muscle groups used in a shorter time

· Greater range of joint movement used

· Prevention to a single muscle group overloading and subsequently leading to imbalance

· Strength, speed and suppleness are combined in a training session

· Avoidance of any mental and physical stagnation

· Avoidance of one movement pattern overloads (e.g. pushing)

· Increased blood flow to all the muscles which control a particular series of joint movements

· Workouts are time efficient (1)

There are various ways to implement Hybrid Training: 1. Alternating repetitions

· First rep narrow grip bench press (emphasizing triceps) followed immediately by a wide grip press (emphasizing chest) and repeat for desired repetitions.

2. Hybrid sets

Pre-exhaust one body part before moving on to another as shown in the examples below (DB ‘ Dumbell):

· Reps 1-5: DB Press; 6-10: DB Curl, 11-15: Side DB Raise

· Reps 1-5: DB Flyes; 6-10: DB Pullovers: 11-15: DB Bench Press

· Reps 1-5: Narrow grip bench press; 6 -10: Wide grip bench press

· Reps 1-5: DB squats; 6-10: Overhead press

· Reps 1-5: Front DB Raises; 6-10: Side DB Raises, 11-15: Back DB Raises

3. Hybrid repetitions

Here one movement follows directly the next:· DB Squat to bicep curl to shoulder press

· DB Squat to side DB raise

· DB Lunge to bicep curl to press

· DB Lunge to triceps kickback

Rules to Hybrid Training

1. A weight must be chosen which will not impose excessive strain on the muscles involved in the weakest movement in each sequence.

2. You are only limited by your imagination

3. When choosing specific exercises I highly recommend addressing your current muscle imbalances and balancing workouts to correct them (if unsure seek advice from a certified trainer experienced in postural assessment and programs).

Cocaine Use By College Students And Celebrities Article - Health Articles

Cocaine Use Increases

An article entitled “Cocaine Epidemic Feared As Cocaine Deaths Nearly Double In Florida Over Past 5 Years” was featured on the “Medical News Today” website on October 21, 2006. Not surprisingly, the information contained in this article was quite disconcerting. For instance, one of the key points in the article was that cocaine use is on the rise among college students with disposable income and also among high-profile celebrities. Perhaps of more importance, however, are two facts that are associated with the escalation in cocaine use: the increased cocaine-related emergency room visits and the rising cocaine-related fatalities. In fact, according to Florida drug authorities, cocaine-related deaths in Florida have almost doubled from 2000 to 2005.

Why People Use Cocaine

Why do various individuals use cocaine? Cocaine gives a person a feeling of euphoria, energy, and at times, an unbelievable, almost superhuman sense of control and mastery. For instance, some people who have taken cocaine have been known to leap out of windows or off rooftops, thinking that they could fly or that they could jump dozens of feet without getting injured. There is, however, a physiological reason why people continue to use cocaine after their first encounter. Cocaine exhausts the “feel-good” neurotransmitter dopamine, thus causing a need for even more use. In short, and from a physiological perspective, cocaine use perpetuates more cocaine use.

Fatalities and Cocaine Use

To gain a better understanding of the ultimate danger inherent in cocaine use, namely death, one needs to focus on the timeframe regarding its life-threatening effects. To accomplish this, cocaine use will be compared with prescription drug abuse.

The abuse of prescription drugs such as Oxycontin, Vicodin, and Adderall can trigger abrupt cardiac or respiratory arrest at the time of abuse. Thus the critical and fatal timeframe when abusing prescription drugs is mostly “short-term.” Conversely, due to the snowballing effects of cocaine, especially regarding the blood vessel damage that increases the risk of stroke or heart attack as a person ages, users can suddenly die years after their cocaine abuse started. Therefore, the critical and fatal timeframe for cocaine use, unlike the same measure for prescription drug abuse, is typically “long term.”

Why the Rise in Cocaine Use?

Why is cocaine use increasing? One of the reasons is that celebrities who are addicted to cocaine have become “walking cocaine advertisements” and, as a result, have been able to adversely influence others, such as students, who have access to relatively large amounts of disposable income.

The Need For Intervention and Education

Florida drug experts stress that additional drug education and intervention need to take place in schools, colleges, and in local communities nationwide to help prevent a full-blown cocaine epidemic. I agree, but to be effective, I assert that the intervention and educational strategy has to include facts that challenge the lifestyles of the cocaine-using celebrities. Let me explain. Students need to be aware that they are observing a “snapshot in time” that does not reveal “the rest of the story” as Paul Harvey would say. Stated differently, college students who are impressed by cocaine-using high rollers need to learn how to see through the VIPs’ facade and realize that they are getting “sold” faulty goods by the cocaine-using rich and famous.

Many celebrities are at or approaching middle age. As a result, most, if not all, of the high-profile chronic cocaine have learned first-hand about the consequences of their drug-related lifestyles. On the other hand, most “traditional” college students are either teenagers or very young adults. Due to the cumulative effects of cocaine use, however, college students who continue to use cocaine are essentially playing Russian roulette with their near and long-term future.

The Rest of the Story

College students must be made aware of the fact that the cocaine-using celebrities that they are impressed with are really loose cannons that may explode into oblivion at any time because of their drug-related lifestyles. This “ultimate” and fatal consequence, however, does not tell the whole story. Indeed, the “rest of the story” also focuses on both the short-term and the long-term health consequences of cocaine use.

Short and Long-Term Effects of Cocaine Use

What the impressionable students have not seen are the friends of celebrities who have died from cocaine-related cardiac arrest, seizures, strokes, and respiratory failure. In addition, the vulnerable students have not been told about the “coke crash” that certainly has left some of the rich and famous depressed, irritable, and fatigued.

Not only this, but the easily influenced students have not been informed about the loss of smell, problems with swallowing, and the nosebleeds experienced by some of the rich and famous who got their cocaine “buzz” via snorting. Moreover, the “receptive” students have not been notified about the bizarre, unpredictable, and at times violent behavior of many high rollers who took increasingly larger doses of cocaine in order to experience the desired high.

Additionally, the suggestible students were not informed about the abdominal pain and nausea experienced by some of the cocaine-using celebrities. In a similar manner, the impressionable students were not told about the paranoid psychosis and auditory hallucinations experienced by various VIPs who experimented with binge cocaine use, i.e., taking more frequent AND higher doses of the drug at the same time.

Moreover, the vulnerable students were not told about the fever, convulsions, blurred vision, muscle spasms, and comas experienced by some of the cocaine-using VIPs or by some of their friends who “party” with them. Similarly, the impressionable students were not told about the major weight loss, malnourishment, and loss of appetite experienced by numerous celebrities who have been chronic cocaine users. And finally, the susceptible students were not informed about the severe chest pains, coughing, shortness of breath, and bleeding in the lungs experienced by some of the celebrities who got their cocaine “buzz” via smoking.

Conclusion

College students need to become knowledgeable of the immediate and the long-term health problems that virtually all chronic cocaine users, even celebrities, eventually experience. In addition, they need to become aware of their vulnerability to cocaine use due to the fact that, statistically speaking, the 18 to 25-year-old age group currently has the highest rate of cocaine use compared to other age groups. Until college students can “see” the contradictions and damaging effects inherent in the questionable lifestyles of cocaine-using VIPs, however, some of them will continue to follow the destructive paths of the high-profile cocaine-using celebrities.

Dollars Don’t Make Health Article - Health Articles

Americans now spend over $1.5 trillion annually on medical care. There is no end in sight to rising costs. From the medical community’s standpoint, why should there be? If you have a cash cow you milk it for all it is worth.

The public’s and the government’s only protestation is when there isn’t enough money. The question is not whether we need more drugs, vaccines, diagnostic machines, lab tests, surgeries and hospital facilities, but rather how will it be paid for. The medical behemoth is considered as essential to life as food and water and thus it is petted, pampered and protected. While it gorges itself and swells to obscene size, everyone clamors for unlimited access to it by way of insurance and government entitlement programs.

Now then, if the medical system we have in place were truly decreasing disease, optimizing people’s health, increasing healthy life span and decreasing mortality that would be one thing. But as we have learned from the foregoing, that is not at all the case. Modern medical care does not prevent disease or improve health; it is the number one killer. Medical consumers are lambs being led to the slaughter. They protect, cuddle, honor and take pride in its techno-wizardry, and then wonder why it is getting so rotund as they feed it by marching zombie-like right into its mouth.

The gorging and human sacrifice is ignored because it is assumed that the esoteric scientific sophistication, shiny stainless steel and elaborate machines are the best there is and if it is failing in any respect then it just needs more dollar–to do what it is doing but only more and better. Isolated heroic successes lead everyone to believe everything is surely on track and that all it will take is more dollars and everyone’s cure will be a heroic success.

Time to step back, take a deep breath and oxygenate the brain a little.

What does it say about our society when a huge percentage of the gross national product is centered on illness? Shouldn’t it ring an alarm ‘ other than the cry to increase taxes and create medical entitlement programs and insurance to guarantee that everyone can participate even more and grow it even further?

You would think that with all the money thrown at the problem, health would be improving. But it is not, in spite of the propaganda that health solutions are in a pill, on a surgery table or just around the corner … if we would just fund more research. Doesn’t the outrageous growth of medical expenditure in the absence of proportionate salubrious results speak to the failure of the system, not its success? Shouldn’t health care, by definition, be moving in the opposite direction and be self-eradicating?

When something is so clearly amuck, it’s time to take a close look at the philosophical underpinnings and assumptions. The underlying premise of modern medicine is reductionistic materialism. However, the body is not only fundamentally not matter, it is all one, it is holistic and intimately linked with the rest of the world. The materialistic assumption that we are a mere amalgam of data, parts and pieces that can be manipulated at will, and a chemical soup held in by a membrane—a sort of test tube made of skin—is neither scientific nor rational…nor does it work.

Materialism also leads to the quick-fix approach. Hey, if a chemical in the body is out of whack, take a chemical to neutralize it. If your gizzard is acting up, get it taken out. If the medicine you are taking is making you sick, take another medicine for that. If eating fries and pop cause a burning in the gullet, take a pill. People want to think of their bodies as an easily repaired machine, and doctors go right along.

The quick-fix approach fills the bill for an instant-gratification society. It is also simple, profitable and eliminates probing into people’s lives to see what the cause is really: run a test, check a number, give a pill and send a bill. But is counter to the way the body operates. We are a self-healing mechanism, infinitely complex, finely tuned and holistic, not just an assemblage of pulleys, pipes, levers, protons and valves. To force the body into submission with drugs or mechanical alterations throws it out of balance because we do not fully understand what it is we are even tinkering with. Manipulating parts without consideration for the balance of the whole is doomed.

I am speaking here of the chronic degenerative illnesses ‘ cancer, heart disease, arthritis, and so on, not crises such as anaphylactic shock or an operable tumor pressing on the heart. Modern medicine can work miracles with these sorts of conditions because they are mechanical ‘ as opposed to metabolic and systemic ‘ failures and thus respond to mechanical solutions. The great degenerative disease killers today result from longstanding problems of lifestyle imbalance and are not solved by Band-Aids no matter how expensive they are.

People who spend years in esoteric and costly medical training don’t figure anyone other than them has a right to speak with authority on the subject. That creates pompous and closed minds. Health and healing is not the place for that. Lives and suffering are at stake. This is not to impugn the efforts of the many hard working and often underpaid health care workers. But intent does not erase result. As shown in a previous chapter, people who submit to medical care are far more likely to be injured or killed than by any other life choice they make. It must also be admitted that financial motive and ego to one degree or another weave their way into the medical psyche.

Most doctors come to understand that disease is self-inflicted through improper lifestyle choices. Few, however, have the financial courage to tell people that they need to change their lives, not get another pill or have surgery. Patients will just go elsewhere where they will be told what they want to hear. Or the doctor might even be threatened with suit for offending a patient. Case in point is a New Hampshire doctor who was turned in to the Board of Medicine and the attorney general for telling a patient she needed to lose weight. (Washington Post Aug 24, 2005)

As hard as doctors try to do what is right, there is the constant financial pressure. There are bills to pay and the potential for a lavish lifestyle. Doctors also feel entitled. A long and costly education, long hours, law suits, malpractice insurance and putting up with an endless procession of patients who will do nothing to help themselves seems deserving of more than average pay. The solution is doing more. Conveniently, the medical standard of care (what doctors are taught to do to avoid liability) encourages more of about everything. More lab tests, longer hospitalization, more diagnostics, more drugs and exploratory surgery. So, although in many cases the best advice to a patient is to go home and make life changes, doctors too often do that which is safe and creates income, which just so happens to be what the patient wants anyway.

Medical insurance is not the solution. It shares the blame for the explosion in healthcare costs. Give anyone access to a bottomless vat of money that promises cure and they will dip in with gusto. If patients were made to pay as they go, people would do more shopping and use more discernment. Doctors would be forced to use judgment as well. The net result would be a lot less unnecessary medical care. When responsibility shifts to individuals to take care of themselves, there will be more health and a lot less medical injury.

Since everything seems to move by the force of dollars, why not shift the rewards? We could do it like it was done in ancient times and even more recently in the Far East: Pay doctors as long as the patient is well. If the patient becomes ill, the doctor forfeits the pay. But that’s too rational. There are too many money interests fighting tooth and claw to keep things exactly as they are. It also does not fit the fable that disease is “just one of those things” to which we may innocently fall victim. Why hold the doctor (or ourselves, more appropriately) accountable for an “act of God?”

As philosophically flawed as modern medicine is, it is by and large an effect, not a cause. Medical commerce is driven by consumer demand. If the market were not there, the business of increased profit for increased health failure could not exist.

People like to shift responsibility to others and follow physics down the path of least resistance and effort. Heaven forbid that we might have to change our lifestyle or become informed. Let’s just let someone else take care of everything for us. All it takes is money. You know, like if the basement is leaking, the car won’t start or smoke comes out of the computer. Money cures these things so why would it not cure us? So it is easily reasoned in our consumer/repair/expert-oriented society, that if any problem is not being solved, more money is the answer.

Don’t wait for things to change. You change. You can decide not to participate in the nonsense. You can learn to take control and optimize your health by being the best you can be by giving your mind and body the lifestyle and food it was designed for. Money really has nothing to do with the solution to the problem. In fact, money can spell your demise by not only the unhealthy lifestyle of indulgence it permits, but by making it too easy to obtain the best and most that modern medicine has to offer.

If people would learn how to take care of themselves and take ownership of their own health, the medical sinkhole would shrivel and the tidal wave of chronic degenerative diseases would dry up to a trickle.

Mom, How F.I.T.T. Is Your Workout? Article - Health Articles

Moms don’t have the time or desire to mess around with complicated workouts that don’t get results. If you want real Mommy Muscle you need a plan that’s based on principles not infomercials and advertising.

Some things you can just count on over time. These certainties are the fundamentals of life. Let’s test it. I predict if you have a stroller age baby - they will cry today. Do you want to challenge my prediction?

I doubt it. Why am I so confident? Because my prediction is based on a fundamental principle of infant development. (One you undoubtedly know well.) A baby crying is a principle aspect of their life. It’s a reliable and fundamental behavior that allows us to make informed decisions about a baby’s condition and needed care.

I’ve noticed when it comes to fitness development; many people tend to ignore principles. Perhaps it’s because we’re constantly exposed to books, magazines, fast talkers and beautiful photography that pitch exotic opportunities to transform our lives. Maybe it’s because fundamentals are boring and unsexy. After all we don’t see them advertised. Besides, who wants to hear the way to get in better shape is to take a walk, when the T.V. is tempting us with a tan, toned model smiling at her beautiful boyfriend while taking her fat burning pill?

So what I’m about to offer you (absolutely free!) are the fundamentals of effective exercise. If you understand these principles you can create workouts that achieve predictable results. These principles are also the key to optimizing or re-energizing your current workouts.

Getting F.I.T.T.

F.I.T.T. is an acronym used to teach fitness professionals (the good ones at least). It stands for Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type. These principles form the foundation of any effective fitness program. Alone, they offer insight to uncover opportunities for you to get better results. However, these principles are really an integrated system. By applying one you affect the others. I’ll give a brief summary now and then detail each of the four principles in later posts.

The Principle of Frequency:

How often should you work out? Frequency is really about your body’s ability to recover from exercise stress. Exercise too often and you’ll over-train. This leads to injury, frustration and poor results.

Workout too little and your body will not need to change its physiology. There simply are not enough stimuli to create a response. In this case, the response is your results ‘ be it fat loss, muscle tone or more energy, etc…

Frequency then is a principle of balance. Not too much, not to little.

The Principle of Intensity:

How hard should you exercise? Intensity is about work and your body’s ability to handle exercise stress. It asks questions like how many repetitions should I do and what weight should I use? How fast should I run, walk or jog?

Intensity is a principle of capacity. How much can your body handle safely? It might be more than you think, but sometimes should be less than you want.

The Principle of Time:

How long should you workout? Time is about defining need. If you’re training for a sport and your game lasts one hour, you NEED to factor that into your training. If you’re a busy mom who has 20 minutes to exercise during your baby’s nap you NEED a workout to fit that time.

Time is a principle of relativity. You can get a lot done in little time. You can also spend a lot of time exercising and have very little to show for it.

The Principle of Type:

What kind of exercise is best? There are two kinds of “type” - general and specific. General refers to the macro types of exercise like, strength training, aerobic exercise and flexibility training. Specific refers to the micro types of exercise including running, walking, Pilates, Yoga, free-weights, machines, sport specific, etc, etc, infinity…

Type is a principle of relevance and fashion. There are many ways to achieve a goal. Exercise methods we especially enjoy or see others get results from have special relevance and naturally attract us to use them. When the type of exercise we use stops being effective, or bores us we can move to a new type that offers better mental, physical or even spiritual relevance.

You can try on exercise types like clothes. If it fits and looks good, wear it. If you find something better, you can always change. Just go shopping…

The FITT principles are the foundation of a successful fitness plan. Within them are the real variables we can “tweak” to achieve better results in half the time. It’s an infomercial claim that really does work. But just incase you need a little more hype to get you thinking, I’ll indulge you…
