What Happens to your Body When you Quit Smoking?

October 29th, 2008 by admin

While you want to stop, you might not know what happens to your body when you quit smoking. In addition to nicotine, cigarettes contain many chemicals that affect your health in very damaging ways. It might be difficult to believe, but healing begins within 20 minutes when you quit smoking.

Within the first 20 minutes of quitting, your healing process begins. Your blood pressure decreases, your pulse rate drops, and the body temperature of your hands and feet increases. These benefits will continue to improve your health for years.

After eight hours of quitting smoking, the carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal and the oxygen level in your blood increases to normal.

At 24 hours, your chance of a heart attack decreases.

At 48 hours, your nerve endings begin regrowth and your ability to smell and taste improves.

And the benefits of quitting smoking are just beginning.

Between two weeks and thee months of stopping, your circulation improves, walking becomes easier, and your lung function increases.

Your worst nicotine withdrawal symptoms subside within the first month. After that, you learn how to decipher and reprogram the psychological urges to smoke that you’ve all built up over the years.

Starting as early as a month after you quit smoking, and continuing for the next several months, you may notice significant improvements in coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue, and shortness of breath.

At one year smoke-free, your excess risk of coronary heart disease is decreased to half that of a smoker.

Once you put a year between you and the last cigarette you smoke, congratulate yourself! Be grateful for the freedom you have created for yourself. The benefits of the positive choices you’ve made will continue to grow as you move forward from here.

For all of the work it takes to shed your addiction to nicotine, the incredible feelings of freedom and control you’ll be rewarded with when you quit smoking are just the beginning of the benefits headed your way.

At two years smoke-free, your chance of achieving long-term success with quitting tobacco increases significantly. Smoking relapse rates drop off sharply after two years.

At five years after quitting tobacco, your stroke risk is reduced to that of people who have never smoked.

At 10 years smoke-free, your risk of lung cancer drops to as little as one-half that of continuing smokers and your risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas decreases. Your risk of ulcers also decreases.

At 15 years smoke-free, your risk of coronary heart disease is similar to that of people who have never smoked, and your risk of death returns to nearly the level of people who have never smoked.

It may be difficult to imagine yourself as an ex-smoker with 15 years of freedom from the habit. It is possible, and it starts with a first step of making the commitment to quit, and then taking action. From there, it’s just a day-by-day process.

Now that you’ve seen what happens to your body when you quit smoking, you’ll want to stop as quickly as possible. Don’t let smoking waste any more of your life.

Non Surgical Face Lifts : Is There an Effective Alternative? by Danna Schneider

October 29th, 2008 by admin

Face lifts are one of the most serious surgeries you can have when it comes to cosmetic surgery. Not only are they costly, but they involve a long healing process, and the results can be very unnatural looking and “plastic”.

It is certainly not anyone’s wish to come out looking like they’ve had their face pulled back, but rather that they have turned the clock back ten years, gracefully. Unfortunately, the “good” facelifts are few and far between. Are there really any effective alernatives, a “non surgical facelift”, if you will?

Well, thanks to the ever-growing market for this type of beauty and youth restoration, there are actually some less drastic measures you can take that will literally take years off you face, without surgery, or with minimally invasive surgery performed by a professional. Let’s take a look at the non surgical alternatives to facelifts. The first, and increasingly popular and less invasive option is what you call a “mini facelift”.

The mini facelift involves small incisions made in key areas around the lower part of the jawline, rather than a complete sweep of the skin surrounding the face, and pinpointed areas where the face can be gently pulled to look more taught and erase wrinkles.

The mini facelift gives you a younger looking face and neck, with less cost, less recovery time, and a more natural outcome that leaves the lower part of your face refreshed and rejuvenated looking. It also pulls any jowl-like appearance and loose skin around the neck back up to where it should be.

Another non surgical alternative to a full-on facelift is a subdermally injected filling of the problem areas which usually goes away after a few months, and needs to be re-done after it is absorbed into the body. This method of facial rejuvenation can actually tighten the skin, pull it back up, and make it looked toned and youthful again, while erasing fine lines and wrinkles by physically filling them in.

Facial rejuvenation can be a combination of fillers used to fill in wrinkles and lines. The different fillers that may be used are injected locally to the areas that need it, and include colllagen, restylane, hyaluronic acid and even fat injections that are either human derived or come right from you.

There are also 100% non invasive options that can be used by a professional to help smooth away the lines that have come with age. One of those, which requires quite a bit of healing time and also some pain is laser resurfacing.

A laser is used over the surface area of the facial skin, and it actually helps to take away layers of skin as well as to help rejuvenate collagen production. It is pretty expensive and your skin will be extremely red and raw for weeks if not months after this is performed. The results, however are fairly extraordinary.

A less painful alternative to full-on laser resurfacing is the Fraxel Laser, which actually does the same thing as a normal laser does, but it doesn’t penetrate all of the skin’s layers, rather it allows the user to penetrate and treat only the specific areas that need it.

This makes for less raw skin and quicker recovery. This is not cheap either though, it will run you anywhere from $1,000.00 to $1,500.00 per treatment, and at least five treatments are needed to see a dramatic improvement. I’ve seen the before and afters though, and they are nothing short of impressive.

Chemical peels are another option for facial rejuvenation, and they can vary in strength and severity as well. A chemical peel is performed by a professional, and they can make the chemicals either strong or weak, depending on the depth of skin damage they would like to remove.

This is primarily used for clients with a lot of photodamage, or discoloration, and it is especially known for restoring a healthful glow to the skin as well as an even color and texture, which often comes with youthful skin. The recovery time depends on how deep the peel goes.

Of course another non surgical alternative to a face lift is Botox, but I look at Botox as more of a local and preventive measure against further wrinkles, not really a “lift” since what it does is freeze the area it’s injected to, it doesn’t actually lift or pull the skin back to its rightful place.

Botox is probably a good option for some, but I tend to dislike the appearance it gives to some people, as it doesn’t allow them to fully express themselves, and that is what makes our faces beautiful, the fact that we can use expressions to show our emotions.

As far as “do it yourself” alternatives to facelifts, there are some pretty decent products out there on the market that you can use on a daily basis to help keep the skin fresh and also to help keep it lifted, toned and youthful looking. There are now hand held soft light lasers available for purchase online.

They emulate the soft light lasers that are often used in dermatologists offices to help stimulate collagen and rejuvenate the skin, helping to soften wrinkles and even acne scarring. I bought one of these myself and had some very good results, but I just couldn’t keep up with the nightly use, and so I must admit I let the results go away.

There are also some excellent home microdermabrasion kits that can be purchased for home use. They allow you to gently take dead skin cells and damaged layers of skin off, and often leave you with a glow and a softer, more youthful look. Another home kit that can be purchased are light acid peels for the face.

These are probably not nearly the strength of a chemical peel you would receive under professional care, but they can certainly offer a benefit that you can use any time you feel your face needs a nice little extra “lift”.

And there you have it, what I think are the most effective alternatives to the drastic face lift. They range in cost considerably, as well as the recovery time and healing process, but they all can have some astounding results in your campaign against aging skin.

Asthma

October 29th, 2008 by admin

Asthma

Asthma is a chronic disease characterized by recurrent attacks of breathlessness and wheezing, which vary in severity and frequency from person to person. During an asthma attack, the lining of the bronchial tubes swells, causing the airways to narrow and reducing the flow of air into and out of the lungs.Causes Asthma is caused by a complex interaction of environmental and genetic factors that researchers do not yet fully understand. These factors can also influence how severe a person’s asthma is and how well they respond to medication. As with other complex diseases, many environmental and genetic factors have been suggested as causes of asthma, but not all of them have been replicated. In addition, as researchers detangle the complex causes of asthma, it is becoming more evident that certain environmental and genetic factors may only affect asthma when combined. Can Asthma Be Prevented? We don’t yet know how to prevent asthma, but there are some things that can lower your chances of having an asthma attack. To prevent asthma symptoms: Learn about your asthma and how to control it. Use medicines as directed by your doctor to prevent or stop attacks. Avoid things that make your asthma worse as much as possible. Get regular checkups from your doctor. Follow your asthma self-management plan. The importance of inflammationInflammation, or swelling, is a normal response of the body to injury or infection. The blood flow increases to the affected site and cells rush in and ward off the offending problem. The healing process has begun. Usually, when the healing is complete, the inflammation subsides. Sometimes, the healing process causes scarring. The central issue in asthma, however, is that the inflammation does not resolve completely on its own. In the short term, this results in recurrent “attacks” of asthma. In the long term, it may lead to permanent thickening of the bronchial walls, called airway “remodeling.” If this occurs, the narrowing of the bronchial tubes may become irreversible and poorly responsive to medications. How does asthma affect breathing?Asthma causes a narrowing of the breathing airways, which interferes with the normal movement of air in and out of the lungs. Asthma involves only the bronchial tubes and does not affect the air sacs or the lung tissue. The narrowing that occurs in asthma is caused by three major factors: inflammation, bronchospasm, and hyperreactivity.Prevention of Asthma TreatmentPatients need to understand how to use a peak flow meter and understand the symptoms and signs of an asthma exacerbation. Regular follow-up visits (at least every six months) are important to maintain asthma control and to reassess medication requirements. Patients with persistent asthma should be given an annual influenza vaccine.Read about Herbal Remedies and Also Read About kohinoor Gold andTribulus Terrestris

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Treatment Using Medical Intuition & Energy Healing by Brent Atwater

October 29th, 2008 by admin

Montel Williams called it an insidious disease. Richard Pryor passed away with it’s complications, and Michael Wellford, when diagnosed, just said “I’m NOT having it!”

Multiple Sclerosis or MS is a slow progressing disorder and then disease that drains it’s owners of energy and then life functioning abilities. Multiple Sclerosis symptoms, like a shadow, are always there, even in remission, and ever present in it’s ultimate progression.

When you receive notification that you need to be tested for multiple sclerosis symptoms, your mind definitely has something to deal with. There are so many “what ifs” to consider, and an entire new future to contemplate that is mind-boggling. Even the strongest individuals succumb to moments of random horror, selective thought patterns, and

then a bone chilling resolve of sorts as to how to handle their diagnosis. When that blood test and MRI scan come back negative for those that are lucky, you are ever grateful for being spared the “positive” test result.

As a medical intuitive and intuitive distant energy healer I work with Multiple Sclerosis treatment for clients. Although addressing physical problems is a major concern, first one must address the underlying emotional and mental contributions that direct the body to manifest the disease. If the disorder is not a Karmic journey that the soul has chosen to experience, then I begin with positive mind over matter actions, attitudes and affirmations. In deciding right now, this very minute, to address and make positive free will choices to change your mind’s attitude about your multiple sclerosis symptoms immediately starts a healing process.

I have found that in early stage MS mental positive attitude creates a greater immune system response that in turn helps diminish symptoms. It’s the old adage of YOUR mind over YOUR matter. Your cells are here to house your life force energy called your Soul. You are the commander of your cells, ie your body, and YOU are the superintendent of your building ie your body, so how you handle your maintenance is all part of the healing journey. Having a “can do” attitude directs your cellular structure to do just that, assist in healing itself.

My personal multiple sclerosis research has shown that the fatigue suffered by most MS clients can be greatly diminished by mental resolve to get up and get going and to command your cells to do so. Further investigations have illustrated that prayers, affirmations, and talking to and commanding your cells have great beneficial results. Once we have established a solid mental directive to be as physically healed as possible, we now address physical concerns and complications with energy healing.

Energy healing and multiple sclerosis shows great promise. By using directed electromagnetic bio molecular energy healing, we can reframe bio structures to their initial blueprint of health. Neural pathways can be restructured so that those with paralysis can move their legs or arms. Numb extremities can be revived and regenerated to sensation. In several clients’ with these complications, after the cellular and neural connections were restored and regenerated, physical therapy was used to restore their muscles that had atrophied due to lack of use over months or years. Other sensations such as tingling could be reversed by regenerating the nerve’s mylen sheath, and personal energy levels can be restored. To date, various multiple sclerosis complications can be reversed, and or put into remission or lessened with energy healing.

In the future, energy healing and using mind over your matter biofeedback with your cells, will be another form of multiple sclerosis treatment that will facilitate and create healthy bodies for those experiencing MS.

Chronic Sinusitis Cure Should Not Be a Problem

October 28th, 2008 by admin

Chronic Sinusitis Cure Should Not Be a Problem

Sinusitis may be described in general as an inflammation of the sinuses. But when you look more into it, you can say a lot more than that about it. A lot of people fall prey to the disease and find ways to relieve their discomfort with acute and chronic sinusitis cure.To clear the ground, acute sinusitis applies to a short term condition wherein the patient recover on its own in just a few days or with the help of plenty of rest, proper diet and a few use of decongestants. Chronic sinusitis however, is a recurring condition that can last for more than three months, bringing you continuous discomfort.SyptomsSinusitis symptoms may include any of the following:• headache• facial pain – particularly on the cheeks and ears• nasal congestion (stuffy nose) - due to swelling and/or excessive mucus• runny nose• toothache• bad breath• coughing• difficulty in swallowing• sore throat• fever• fatigueThe abovementioned symptoms can manifest themselves in any of the kinds of sinusitis. But this does not mean that you can just use a generic cure for these symptoms. For instance, yes, your pains and discomforts may go away if you use pain relievers for your headache, toothache and fever. But relief may just be temporary if you do not eliminate the real source of your pains. Understanding a Chronic DiseaseOf course, who would want to stay sick for a long period of time? Curing or availing yourself of a remedy should not be a problem, since there are a lot of various means to reach the chronic sinusitis cure that is just right for you.For a better understanding of which cure can work with your chronic sinusitis, consider these:1. Saline irrigation is the manner of rinsing your nasal passages with a salt solution to clear out excess mucus and infections. This will also moisturize your sinuses and connecting passages, paving the way to a faster healing process. You can include this procedure in your routine as a way of cleaning and disinfecting your nasal passages.2. Bacterial sinusitis, which is a common chronic condition, can be treated using antibiotics. The bacteria that cause this type of sinusitis need to be fought off with medication that is made for the exact purpose of killing infectious bacteria and preventing them from reproducing. 3. Combating chronic sinusitis resulting from a development of seasonal allergies and/or other inflammatory conditions needs to be aided by using decongestants and antihistamines. In this way, the swelling of the sinuses and nasal passages can be decreased, and you can breathe more easily. 4. Obviously, for fungal sinusitis, you should turn to antifungal medicines. Topical treatments are available for this. 5. When your sinusitis occurs too long, there is a danger of having tissue damage. Excessive mucus may also get stuck in the sinuses. Surgery may be needed to repair the sinuses and clear the mucus buildup caused by this long term sinusitis6. Be careful with the medications you take and make sure there are no contradicting effects as sinusitis may be connected to other related upper respiratory tract conditions, or to separate conditions that simply occur at the same time. For example, pregnant women need to ask the doctor’s advice on how to take medication for their respective conditions. Another instance is, when you have allergies and bacterial sinusitis at the same time, antihistamines are not recommended. With antihistamines, allergies may be alleviated, but the bacteria causing your sinusitis might just get worse. Know that you cannot diagnose your sinusitis alone so it is best to consult a doctor and know which chronic sinusitis cure fits the bill.

New And Better Methods Of Doing Hair Removal

New And Better Methods Of Doing Hair Removal

Hair removal has been practiced for a long time due to various reasons and there are new and better methods that have been developed to achieve ideal hair removal results. Hair removal is the extraction of hair from the skin and, it is also called depilation. The most popular is shaving and is undertaken by men and women everyday. Men are known to shave their chins while women remove hair in their legs and arms. There are very many reasons why removal of hair is practiced by various people in the society and the major one is for aesthetics or to enable the people look better. It has been a popular culture to look more presentable when you do not have too much facial hair for men and, if they do have it, it is usually different and kempt. This is mostly the case in the urban setting where people have white color jobs. In other cultures, due to their environment and nature of work, shaving may not be common. There are women who have male hormones in them and this causes the growth of beard. This is one of the most common reason why women engage in hair removal. In ancient Egypt, people used to remove hair to discourage lice and fleas from infesting their bodies. This is because hair is a breeding ground for such parasites and therefore, they did it for hygiene reasons. The Egyptians also depilated for religious reasons. They believed that shaving hair all over would present them more pure before the gods. It is also undertaken for medical reasons and this is evident when surgery of a particular part of the body is being performed. However, it is not very necessary to shave because hair has now been found not to affect the healing process in any significant way. Cancer medication like chemotherapy will cause the hair to fall and the patients shave their heads totally when they experience hair loss. Some patients in anticipation of the treatment, remove the hair in advance.Women in the ancient times, engaged in hair removal of the pubic area to please the culture that found such women more attractive than others with the hair. Many other cultures engaged in this and going through history books will reveal so much. Many cultures in Africa shaved the heads of widows as a sign of cleansing of bad spirits. When young men prepared for circumcision, removal of hair was paramount to mark the beginning of a new chapter. When transsexuals are preparing for gender reassignment, men must shave their pubic hair to allow the creation of a neovagina. This is a modern culture which is increasingly gaining so much popularity especially in the western world.Removal of hair is done in the military. This is because of their hectic schedule and it helps to maintain hygiene, it is also a sign of solidarity and it keeps them disciplined and together. There are very many ways to remove hair and you can either do it traditionally or engage in more modern ways. Modern ways include the use of laser which is a revolutionary way to do it because you can have hair removed permanently. There are several parts of the body that hair is usually removed and they include abdomen, back, eyebrows, face, head legs, eyelashes, pubic hair and others. Methods of removing hair come with advantages and disadvantages and the internet has many resources on this subject. Whichever method you use, keep safety first.

LASIK Eye Surgery Recovery Issues by Carson Danfield

LASIK Eye Surgery Recovery Issues by Carson Danfield

In the vast majority of cases, recovery from LASIK eye surgery is quick and uneventful. However, as with most all medical procedures, there are certain risks, ut if you take the recommended precautions, you’ll have little to worry about. One of the most important aspects in promoting the healing process is to avoid dry eyes. Dry eyes can act like an abrasive to the cornea and invite infection. You’ll want to use artificial tear drops on a regular basis during healing, especially if you sense dryness. An additional unwanted side effect of dryness is the increased tendency to want to rub your eyes. Rubbing, particularly during the first week or two should be strictly avoided. Rubbing can scratch the cornea or even worse - it can cause the corneal flap to become detached, requiring medical assistance for correction.During the first four hours after LASIK eye surgery, your doctor will prescribe certain medications to be applied frequently, usually at 15 minute intervals. These medications will usually consist of steroids to promote healing and antibiotics to prevent infection. Be sure to adhere to the prescribed regimen of applying these medications. You may want to limit reading, watching television or working at the computer for the first couple of days after LASIK eye surgery. Even though you’ll notice a marked improvement in your vision, you may be subject to headaches if you overdo things during the early stages of your recovery.Avoid any dusty areas or anywhere that has particulate matter in the air. For example, don’t mow the lawn, as the mower can still up grass clippings or other debris that can enter your eyes and cause complications. Also be aware that pet hair can sometimes float in the air and get in your eyes, even if you don’t notice the intrusion.Be careful when showering so that you don’t allow the stream of water to hit your eyes. Also, don’t allow soap or shampoo to enter your eyes. Avoid steam rooms and swimming pools during the healing process. It’s also a good idea to forego any strenuous exercise or sports activities. It’s important that you protect your eyes from any undue pressure and don’t let any foreign objects come into contact with your eyes.During the healing process, you may notice that your eyes are very sensitive to bright light, so be sure to wear sunglasses if you go outdoors.Complications during recovery from LASIK eye surgery are rare, but they do occur. If you notice anything questionable during your recovery period, be sure to consult with your doctor immediately.

Are You Structurally Integrated?

October 28th, 2008 by admin

Are You Structurally Integrated?

If the title sounds like a foreign, even cold concept, you may be surprised to learn how comfortable having a structurally balanced body is, how enlivening it feels. The trick is being aware. What I mean by the trick is the vast majority of us are living with unbalanced, cockeyed bodies without ever having a clue that these imbalances are most likely the cause of the mild to severe fatigue or pain you feel. Over the years, most of us have had accidents and injuries of all kinds that left our bodies a bit “tweaked” if you will. As we recovered, we probably didn’t notice the subtle ways our bodies compensated to accommodate our injuries through the healing process. Over time, those structural compensation patterns, large or small, have slowly been rigidifying into structural / postural / movement imbalances without you ever noticing. Like a snake, slowly inching up on its prey without being noticed, many are caught in the grips of old postural patterns seemingly all at once. In actuality, the pattern has most often been exerting itself within our bodies for years. Consider this, how many times since early childhood have you fallen…. from any distance, been struck in some way by something that hurt, been in crashes and accidents of any kind, had life changing intense emotional experiences, etc.. The fact is, by the time you feel that twinge in your back, or that stiff neck, or frozen shoulder, often years or even decades of accumulative imbalances have been sneaking up on you, slowly but surely. This is the grip of old structural imbalances finally getting your attention. A lot of the time, with pain! If you are thinking this makes sense but doesn’t apply to you because your body is balanced, here is a quick and easy no cost way to check for yourself! The next time you are in your birthday suit in front of a mirror, take a closer look at your body than you normally do. To make the most of this little adventure, while you are standing in front of your mirror, imagine drawing a line down the center of your body from your nose to your toes. So you would be looking at your body as having two distinct, separate halves. Giving yourself lots of time, look at your body carefully noticing the differences in your left and right sides. To help distinguish the differences more clearly, you can tack a string into the ceiling in front of the mirror with a small weight of some kind tied at the bottom to keep the string truly straight. Another good option is cutting a long piece of black electrical tape in half, (so it is half as wide) and simply put the tape in a straight line, top to bottom on the mirror. Now stand right in the middle of your line and look at your body from a perspective of side to side. This could get interesting! To have an even fuller perspective, it may be fun and informative to have someone you are comfortable with look with you. Another option is to get set up, and if you look “perfect”, then just close your eyes and count to 30, (about 30 seconds) and take another look. Without our built in visual orienting mechanism to keep us balanced in space, our bodies will resort automatically to where the least effort is to maintain balance. If you are still in line, congratulations, you just may be structurally integrated! Remember, make it fun!! Points to look for regarding structural integration are:First of all, 1) Notice how even or uneven as the case may be, your shoulders are. Is one lower than the other? 2) Notice the space from each ear to each shoulder. Is one space greater than the other? How is it different?3) How about your head? Is it sitting evenly on top of your shoulders with the sides of the neck even in length?4) Notice your ears. Are they even, or is one closer to the shoulder than the other? 5) Now really take a close look at the front of your shoulders. How are they different? Is one more forward than the other? (this is where a second set of eyes can be helpful)Next, notice your chest and nipples. 1) Is one nipple lower? If it is, do a little investigative work and trace down what other parts are involved in that pattern. (If you are a woman, of course this may be due to a discrepancy in breast shape as well.) 2) Next take your attention to the sides of your torso, from your armpits to your hips. You may notice a difference in length from side to side causing the contour of your skin to be different. Does one side have a crease higher than the other. Is there more tissue bunched up on one side as well making it look fuller? 3) How about your hands? Are they hanging at an even length, in the same position with each other next to your body? Now lets zero in on that line down the middle of your body. 1) Notice your navel, is it exactly in the center of your body, or over to one side of the line? 2) And your hips, do they look perfectly symmetrical? Take a close look. Again, another friendly set of eyes is helpful here. The pelvis is a complex structure with many variations of imbalance possible.3) Place your hands on your hips at the same point on either hip. See if this helps to further clarify height and position differences. You can also look down at your hands to get a different perspective.OK, now for the legs and feet!1) Notice your feet in the mirror. Are they evenly positioned, facing straight ahead? 2) If you look down at them, are they lined up evenly straight across, or is one further back? 3) How about your knees? Are the knee caps pointing straight ahead? If not, notice where they are pointing. If all of this seems like too much trouble there is a simpler way still, although not nearly as effective. All you need to do is stand in front of a mirror fully clothed but with your shirt tail un-tucked, if wearing a shirt. Now just move your body around any old way for a few seconds and then find your natural stance again. 1) Now notice your collar. Is it perfectly symmetrical around your neck? Is there a gap in one side?2) Look at the seams at your shoulders. Are they even?3) Are the buttons in a straight line all the way down your front?4) Look closely at the end of your sleeves, be it a long or shirt sleeve shirt. Do they hang even? You can also see many of the birthday suite check points in clothes, just not so clearly. If you find any of these discrepancies in your posture, you are a perfect candidate for Structural integration bodywork! One of the medications that your dermatologist may prescribe is corticosteroid treatment. This medication relieves the symptoms of irritated skin, mainly inflammation (swelling), itching, and redness. Inflammation, in regards to skin conditions, is slight compared to inflammation due to acute injury.

When prescribed for acne (which results, in part, from oily skin), this treatment is usually given as a topical treatment, meaning that it is applied to the skin, not taken internally. Corticosteroids prescribed for acne may be in a cream or lotion form. In very severe cases which are not helped by strong topical corticosteroids, systemic steroids may be prescribed. These are taken internally and the most popular is known as Prednisone.

If this medication is prescribed for you, there are things that you should know about it in order to use it both safely and successfully. The federal government has the following guidelines that you should keep in mind when using corticosteroids:

Tell your doctor is you have had and reactions to any form of steroids or if you have had adverse reactions to preservatives or dyes which may be used in the compound.

Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or may be pregnant. Animal studies have shown a correlation between use of this medication and birth defects when used on large areas of the body or for long periods of time.

Talk to your doctor about breast feeding while using this medication and Make sure the breasts are free of medication before breast feeding.

Use in children should be monitored by your pediatrician or dermatologist. Corticosteroids can affect growth and create other effects due to absorption through skin in children. Careful monitoring will safely allow your children to utilize the medication.

When using on elderly patients, a doctor should monitor carefully because of the te

ndency of older adults to have thinned skin. Unmonitored use of corticosteroids may result in blood blisters or skin that tears.

As always, make sure your doctor knows about all other medications being used to avoid possible drug interactions.

Make sure that the prescribing doctor knows if you have any of the following medical conditions: Cataracts, Glaucoma, Diabetes, Opens wounds where the medication is to be applied, thinned skin which may bruise easily, or tuberculosis.

It is important that you do not get corticosteroids in your eyes. Make sure that you always wash your hands after application and be very careful about rubbing your face (around the eye area) while treating acne with this medication. Sweating is a factor if you have to use the medication on the forehead. Dab sweat away with a cloth rather than wiping it away with your hands. Do not let sweat run into your eyes if the medication is used on your forehead. If your do happen to get the medication in your eyes, flush immediately with cool water (not cold). Flushing helps clear the medication from the eye and the coolness helps with irritation.

In cases of acne, this medication is generally not used with bandaging. However, if it is, it is important that you apply the medicine exactly as directed because covering it aids in absorption through the skin and over-absorption has increased side effects.

Do not use corticosteroids more often or longer than directed by your doctor. Over usage can result in increased side effects. The medication usually comes with detailed patient instructions aside from your doctors instructions. Be sure to read information provided with the medicine.

If you miss a dose of this medication, you can apply it as soon as your remember, as long as it is not time for your next dose. If your next dose is to be applied soon, just skip the missed dose and resume proper dosing of this medication.

Remember that the major advantage to using corticosteroids is that they reduce inflammation. You still need to continue your organic oily skin care regimen in order to correct the situation. Once the medication is no longer necessary, you will still need to take good care of your skin in a specific regimen for combating oily skin.
