Empowerment or powerlessness! A 12 step Disaster

Empowerment or powerlessness! A 12 step Disaster

Why is it that some people fall into the addiction trap, yet others partake in substances and compulsions moderately?Well, first let’s take a look at what I like to call the addiction equation. In my opinion, the catalyst of addiction is the emotional trauma caused by family dysfunction. The reason one chooses to partake in habitual behavior is relative to masking that emotional pain. Finally, the type of addiction that is chosen is based on social structure and exposure to various substances or compulsions. The constant which completes the addiction process is the level of coping skills possessed. Therefore, it would only stand to reason that the key to abstinence would be a higher level of coping skills. But, what exactly does it mean to possess a higher level of coping skills?Well, to increase your level of coping skills requires increasing self-esteem. Holding ones self in high regard renders addictive behavior repulsive. But, how do you increase your self-esteem?First and foremost, you must learn to forgive yourself. Most people suffering from addiction find it very difficult to forgive themselves since they bare a burden of shame and guilt, not only for their behavior, but also for the pain they have caused others. However, you can forgive yourself, and you can learn to love yourself by curing “wounditis.” You have a choice! You can either continue to feel victimized and wallow in your own misfortune, or you can take a stand and refuse to self-incriminate yourself. You see, you have the same power as everyone else! You are no different! We are all but a grain of sand in the desert of humanity. We are all the same and we are all connected. The majority of all treatment programs offer a group recovery approach as the primary or as a secondary component of their treatment modality. Unfortunately, these groups are counterproductive and leave the individual at risk for continued relapse.Recovery groups place a great deal of emphasis on spirituality, powerlessness, and the emergence of a person’s sense of soul. They claim many of the steps of the twelve-step program to be paradoxical. Concluding that you are powerless over addiction, but like magic, you some how become more powerful! The goal of the program is a spiritual awakening although most people find it difficult to make this connection because they feel victimized by someone else’s behavior. My experience teaches me to conclude that admitting you are powerless does not promote empowerment and nor does it restore self-esteem! In my opinion, many of the twelve steps are unnecessary, and they are actually counterproductive to making a spiritual connection, increasing self-esteem, and achieving addiction recovery. My 5 Steps to Addiction Freedom program streamlines the recovery process by achieving it in five steps. Unlike the twelve-step philosophy, it defines the core issue, and it shows how to overcome it. It eliminates the counterproductive and self-incriminating steps of the failed twelve-step philosophy and replaces them with steps that restore self-esteem, a vital and necessary component to abstinence since addiction is plainly a self-esteem issue! In conclusion, you do have the power to increase your self-esteem! But, self-esteem is not a commodity that you purchase, or a fruit that is plucked from a tree. Possessing self-esteem and merit for ones self is a product of self-love. To love your self you must first forgive yourself, and second, you must embark on an inward journey to awaken your true authentic self and your own personal power. This is not only the key to abstinence, but it’s also a bullet proof self-esteem shield that renders the guns of addiction harmless!Best wishes,David Roppo The Addiction Freedom Coach For a free e-guide on how to overcome addiction click on the link below… help with addiction

How To Overcome Any Addiction Article - Health Articles

October 22nd, 2008 by admin

Addictions are wide and varied, and scientists now tell us we can become addicted to certain emotions, as well as cigarettes, alcohol, and so on.

For some, one hypnosis session is all that’s needed to overcome 20-a-day, or lose weight. All the same, for every quick fix there is at least one relapse. Perhaps this is because there is one crucial element that the majority of therapists miss. This aspect is critical, and, when properly addressed, makes the difference between short term relapse and long term lasting success and freedom.

And here it is…

Any addictive behaviour ‘ whether it’s cigarettes, anger, rage, drugs, fear, violence, depression, indecision, compulsions, or anything else ‘ is only ever filling in for something else.

Every problem is a solution, in some way.

Only when you realise what your addiction is substituting in your life will you have the insight and power to change it. As you think about your life and its events, what kind of feelings were you missing, say, from your younger days, that your addiction might be trying to replace? Keep those thoughts in mind as I explain further - by example.

Close your eyes and go into one of those situations when you are actually doing the behaviour you want to stop now. Look through your own eyes, hear through those ears, and feel the feelings that go with that experience, now.

Now, in this state, ask yourself ‘

1. What BENEFICIAL feelings am I getting from this behaviour, as I’m doing it now? (Feelings of Control/Power/Authority? Relaxation/”Me Time”? Femininity/Manliness? Being Wanted? Feeling Looked-After? Security? Unique-ness/Being Different? Same-ness/Fitting In? Safety?)

2. In what areas of my life am I missing these feelings, that the habit/addiction is filling in for?

3. In what other new - and more productive - ways could I experience these same feelings in my life?

4. Do these better ways ‘fit’ with the rest of my life? (Keep asking until they do…)

5. Am I willing to commit, NOW, to doing these new things instead of the old behaviour for a trial period, of say, three weeks? (Keep recycling %26 adding new ideas until you feel a full-body YES!)

So, in a few short paragraphs you’ve learned just one aspect of my EFT stress relief therapy which will shed light on why you do those things you do, AND you have practical steps to implement and see real change now. Be sure your therapist is aware of these subtle, yet crucial details.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in Adolescents

October 19th, 2008 by admin

Obsessive compulsive disorder or OCD starts from adolescence onwards. OCD is feeling of strong obsessions and compulsions which result in intense discomfort and affects daily functioning. Obsessions are thoughts which are persistent and recurrent. They even include unwanted images and impulses which lead to distress and anxiety. These feelings and thoughts are usually irrational or unrealistic. Compulsions are repetitive rituals or behavior such as checking something again %26 again, or mental acts such as counting. These obsessions %26 compulsions cause intense distress and anxiety and can interfere with the daily activities, relationships, social activities and academic functioning. The person with OCD thinks that he has no control over his actions. OCDs are relapsing and chronic illness.

The thoughts change as the adolescent grows. Younger children suffering from OCD often have thoughts of harm befalling on them and their family such as thief getting into the house through an unlocked door. This will make the children to recheck the door and windows again and again fearing that they might have left the door unlocked accidentally. Teenagers suffering from OCD fear that they might get fall sick due to germs, contaminated food and AIDS. The adolescent develops certain rituals, such as washing hands innumerable times, in order to get over the fear. These rituals help them to think that they have overcome the problem for the time being and give them temporary relief. If they do not perform these rituals, they become more and more anxious.

OCD is a sign of brain circuitry’s unusual functioning and it involves the striatum part of the brain. The brain activity patterns of such people differ from normal people and people with other mental disorders. Researchers have concluded that OCD is usually a family problem and is a disorder of the brain. Streptococcal bacterial infection can create or worsen the condition of OCD. Adolescents with no family history of OCD can also develop it. Most of the adolescents feel embarrassed to talk about their OCDs. They think that people will label them as crazy and this will make them feel ashamed. This will make it difficult for the parents to talk to their children about their OCD, in order to solve them. Parents need to develop good communication skills for this purpose. Parent’s support is also very important to the adolescent. Cooperation is extremely important along with treatment, because if the problem is not treated the adolescent will grow into a disturbed adult.

Most of the adolescents with OCD can receive effective treatment. The treatment can include psychotherapy and intake of medications such as fluoxetine, clomipramine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, sertraline and other serotonin reuptake inhibitors. When OCD is caused due to streptococcal infection, the adolescent can be administered with antibiotics to kill the bacterium which is causing it. Exposure and response prevention behavioral therapy is very useful in solving OCD. In this therapy, the adolescent is wontedly exposed to his/her fears which give him/her obsessive thought. After that he/she is trained to avoid these thoughts and the rituals which he/she carries out to tackle the anxiety.

An adolescent having OCD can also have depression, substance abuse, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, eating disorders, and other types of anxiety disorders. When a person with OCD and other mental illness, is treated, OCD becomes more difficult to treat and even diagnose.
