Coconut Oil and your Thyroid

October 25th, 2008 by admin

Coconut Oil and your Thyroid

There have been a number of studies which strongly claim that coconut oil is not only beneficial but, according to some sources, can actually reverse hypothyroid problems by stimulating the production of increased thyroid hormone. However, an equal number of ‘eminent’ authorities will tell you that if coconut oil works at all, it is as a placebo and nothing more. They go on to say that, because only virgin coconut oil can be sure to have the beneficial impact suggested, this further adds to the profit margin which is the true reason for the marketing campaign rather than anything medical. As is so often the case, the answer appears to lie somewhere between these two extremes. Many vegetable oils in modern western diets are prepared in such a way that the so-called long chain fatty acids they contain are not beneficial for our bodies. Soy-based oils, for example, can actually be seen to slow down the thyroid. Coconut oil contains lauric acid, a medium chain fatty acid that can speed up the metabolism, and natural antioxidants that can help lower our cholesterol. Coconut oil smells quite nice, tastes very pleasant and is good for our bodies. Using coconut milk or coconut flakes is undoubtedly a pleasing and tasty experience for many people, as well as being beneficial. Many consumers of coconut oil quite enjoy drizzling some on their salad in place of other oil and some people have been known to drink it on its own, from a spoon, like a medicine. But it is not a miracle cure. It won’t replace conventional medication.Coconut oil, in its pure, virgin manifestation, is a healthy element of a balanced diet. It is safe to use and doesn’t turn to fat inside your body and, like extra virgin olive oil, it can help you to lower your cholesterol levels. But it won’t make the weight fall off you as if by magic. It won’t kick start your metabolism overnight.People who have to live with hypothyroidism desperately want to live a ‘normal’ life and, almost certainly, coconut oil, as part of a careful, balanced diet, correct medication and a well-adjusted life style can help them to do just that. It can be part of your weight loss program, part of your lowering the cholesterol level campaign and part of your attempts to eat better ‘for your body’s sake’. As long as you maintain a sense of perspective and don’t get carried away by the hype!

A Review of Hair Loss Products by Alison Stevens

October 24th, 2008 by admin

It is easier to prevent healthy hair falling out than to regrow hair in already-dormant hair follicles.

Home Remedies

There are all kinds of home remedies for hair loss. Many of them can be dismissed as old wives tales—but some of them possibly help some people. Here are a few of the more promising home remedies for hair loss:

- Rinse hair with a solution of sage tea and apple cider vinegar

- Almond oil, castor oil, olive oil, jojoba oil and amla oil may have benefits when warmed and

massaged into the scalp

- Coconut milk or aloe vera gel massaged into the scalp may have a similar effect

- A masque of honey and egg yolk can be applied to the hair and scalp.

With the exception of the sage tea and apple cide vinegar all other applications should be shampooed out of the hair after use.

Herbal Remedies

Several herbal remedies make the claim of restoring hair growth and a number of herbal lotions as well as several nutritional supplements claim to be specifically formulated to deal with hair loss. A person with a preference for alternative treatments rather than chemically based treatments may benefit from a visit to a herbalist to discuss herbal hair loss remedies.

It has been suggested that the following herbal remedies may be of assistance in hair loss:

- ginko biloba

- green tea

- polygonum multiflorum, a traditional Chinese herb

- pygeum

- aloe vera

- saw palmetto (serenoa repens)

- stinging nettle

- resveratrol, a natural antioxidant found in grape skins

Some of these are taken in tablet form and some are made into preparations that you massage into your scalp. Some, for example stinging nettle, can cause an allergic reaction, so all herbal preparations should be used with care.

It is claimed that saw palmetto - a herbal DHT inbibitor - has fewer side effects and is cheaper that finasteride (sold in the US as Propecia) and works in a similar manner

Minoxidil (Rogain®)

Many people have confidence in this product for restoring hair growth. It’s available at any pharmacy without a prescription and it appears to work for a lot of people. Minoxidil is useful for both men and women to assist in regrowing hair. Treatment needs to be continuous, however, because ceasing treatment with Minoxidil will cause the hair to again begin falling out.

Finasteride (Propecia®)

Finasteride in an antiandrogen 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, marketed under the names Propecia, Proscar, Finacar and others. It is a prescription medication and may be the best hair loss product for some people. A visit to a doctor is required to get a prescrption, but that in itself is not a bad thing because the doctor will check to see if there is some underlying cause for the hair loss that may require treatment. There are some known side effects with Finesteride, including erectile dysfuntion, that affect a small number of users of the preparation.

Ketoconazole

Ketoconazole is an anti-fungal and potent 5-alpha reductase inhibitor that is often used as a topically applied supplement to other hair loss treatments.

It is interesting to note that placebo treatments often have reasonable success rates (and similar side effects) in studies, although the success rate tends not to be as high as with the product being tested.

Concealing Baldness

There are times when the best hair loss product is a cover up of some kind. This is especially true when the hair loss is temporary, such as when hair falls out during chemotherapy. Several organizations produce hats or caps for cancer sufferers.

Other methods of hiding hair loss include the comb over which involves combing the remaining hair over the bald spot. This ceases to be effective as balness increases. A wig or a hairpiece is another option but in the end, embracing baldness - especially for men - can be the simplest, cheapest and often the best option.

Harder Leaner Bodies Are What You Eat

October 24th, 2008 by admin

What do you do to get a hard lean body ? Not hours and hours in the gym – that will help you a bit but the main thing is what you are pouring into your stomach. You may want to get some ideas on healthy snacks and meals and I hope this article will encourage you to experiment . Basically, you just need to make sure that all the junk food in your house is thrown out or that it never gets a chance to get in ! If you have junk food around, then you are going to eat it and that is not going to get you the hard body you are looking for. The most important thing I reckon is not to make mistakes when you shop for food.

Fresh vegetables are always in my fridge. I like to stock up with onions, broccoli, red peppers, mushrooms, zucchini. Now these will sometimes vary according to the season but that does not really matter so long as they are fresh. I use these vegetables to add to my morning eggs and I will also throw in some diced lean chicken or turkey and maybe some cheeses such as Swiss or goat’s.Coconut milk is full of healthy saturated fat – yes, the good kind of fat you need ! I always have it in my fridge and I can add it to yogurts, oatmeal and smoothies for a great creamy taste.

If you open my fridge, you will find some of the following . First off are eggs because they are a really good source of proteins and lots of other things and they add to your good cholesterol.I have loads of nuts as well, chopped walnuts, peanuts and almonds. Avocados are usually there as well because they provide you with lots of fibre and healthy fats as well. Great for adding to sandwiches, wraps and of course, salads. I keep wholegrain wraps as well. I keep rice bran and wheat germ – these add a nice crunchy taste to your smoothies or yogurt. And don’t forget you can use them whenever you bake bread or muffins. Spinach, carrots and lettuce are there as well for salads when I need them. I use homemade salad dressing – just a few drops of balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil. Forget the stuff in the grocery store as they are full of soybean oil – bad because of free radicals.

What do I have in my kitchen cabinets? I have dark bitter chocolate for a start- always great for a quick jolt of insulin. Actually I am a chocoholic so this satisfies my desires but you have to watch it as it is fairly dense in calories but full of antioxidants. Anyway, it is much healthier than having a cream cake. I keep a few tomato sauces handy - this stuff is full of lycopene which is also very good if you have prostate gland troubles. Kidney beans are great as they will fill up wraps and they also are full of antioxidants so you will live a long time! Brown rice is another staple in my cabinet- the white rice is not a very healthy option. I have whole wheat pasta – again this is much healthier than the white pasta because the wholegrain has lots of fibre. Raw honey is great for sweetening things up and don’t bother with the highly processed stuff. The same goes for maple syrup – you want the organic kind. Aunt Jemina’s maple syrup is full of fructose so you will want to avoid that like the plague. Actually raw honey is great to add to a smoothie or yogurt when you want an insulin surge to put nutrients into your muscles. I also keep Stevia – this a natural sweetener and has none of that saccharine which you find in commercial sweeteners which are deadly. This is great for adding to tea. I am a great tea drinker and my favourites are green tea, oolong, white and rooibos. Coconut milk is also there – when I open it I put the rest in the freezer. My cereals are oat bran – again these are much healthier than the instant oatmeal kind because of the higher fibre content.

I hope you enjoyed looking inside my fridge and kitchen cabinets and that this will give you some great ideas when you go to your grocery store to stock up. Just eat some or most of the stuff above and you will be well on your way to a healthier, leaner you.
