How To Recognize And Get Rid Of Anxiety and Depression
by Jon Arnold

Anxiety and depression are two of the most common psychological disorders that are represented as serious risk factors for almost all chronic disease. While it is normal to be anxious or depressed every once in a while for short bouts, extended periods of anxiety and depression can lead to all types of negative effects on a persons life, both physically, physiologically, and emotionally.

So, what are anxiety and depression and what are their causes? Anxiety is characterized by a state of mind which includes an overwhelming feeling of negativity and morbid thought. Anxiety is essentially a feeling of hopelessness or threat and worry that can be because of a true risk to life and limb, or more commonly an imagined threat. Depression is characterized by a negative appraisal of life events. When someone is depressed, things that normally would be considered pleasurable are no longer enjoyed. In fact, a depressed person feels at a loss of energy and suffers from a general lack of vitality.

Much of the symptoms of anxiety and depression are actually caused by a negative mindset which is brought on by both internal and external stimuli. Deadlines, and lifestyle stress like unhappy married life of high demands at work can cause heightened anxiety through increasing the stress on a person to perform.

Internal stimuli that lead to anxiety are essentially a lack of coping resources to deal with external stressors effectively. This means that, for a given amount of stress, some people are more prone to anxiety and depression than others simply because of the psychological coping mechanisms which are available to them. This also means that by changing the way we perceive and appraise stressful life events, we can affect the effect they have on our mindset.

Some ways to cope with depression and anxiety are through learning to see the world in a different light. Essentially, any event in life, good-bad, stressful-relaxing, only have their effects on our minds based on how we appraise them. This means that if something stressful like getting a promotion at work happens to us, it can have both negative or positive effects on our mood, depending on how we appraise it. If we focus on the possible stresses that come with attaining a higher position at work, such as increased responsibility and workload, we can easily become anxious and stressed out. On the other hand, if we focus on the positive aspects of a higher wage and more significance or recognition at the job, then we can actually find ambition and happiness within our stressful events.

The key to dealing with anxiety and depression is learning how to effectively cope with the stressors, both internal and external that lead to them. This means that by learning proper time management, and through positive thinking as well as exercise to release stress, we can curb the physiological, psychological, and physical effects of anxiety and depression, if not thwart them completely. Only by believing you can gain control can you learn to truly be in control.

Anxiety and Depression: What is the Connection?

Most people are not aware of the fact that anxiety and depression are connected to each other. Some experience both differently under varied circumstances. In order to learn the connection between them, let us learn about these conditions individually. A) AnxietyAnxiety can be referred to as a characteristic feature of most people across the globe. When in its normal form, the condition assists in being vigilant, gaining knowledge and general performance. In brief, anxiety is a useful condition if occurs naturally. However, when it exists in excess, the same condition starts working against the individual. The attention and performance levels are reduced due to feelings related to self-focus and apprehensions in extremes. These are actually aggravated by a specific blend of emotions including anger, guilt, shame, sadness and a dominating fear. This ultimately results in the conditions of unique ‘anxiety’ in an individual. Anxiety or feelings of stress may be referred to as symptoms or a response to pressure. The more these feelings become intolerable in a person, the worse the anxiety is going to react. Now, this does not indicate that person may only face one overwhelming problem. Usually the whole situation is a result of many problems reacting with each other. The most common anxiety disorder that affects about 5-6% of the total population across the globe is known to be the generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The condition is characterized by chronic worry related to almost all types of problems and circumstances in life. The whole situation is different from just the normal anxiety or worry as the disorder brings along with it, more frequency, higher intensity and total uncontrollability of thoughts related to worry. Yes, there may be a biological reason do this disorder. However, nothing has been confirmed yet. It has been proved that some people posses the tendency to overreact to stress that comes their way. One may also come under some sort of genetic influence.B) DepressionThere is absolutely no connection between weakness and depression. It has also been proved that anyone can suffer from the problem irrespective of the gender, caste, creed, color or genetic influence. The term ‘depression’ actually covers a wide variety of problems. It can be referred to as short spans of low mood or even a mind numbing inability of a person to function. In most of the cases, where the depression occurs due to the low mood of the individual, it is easy to sort out on one’s own self. One does not require any sort of medical intervention in these cases. However, unfortunately, there are cases where about 5 to 10% of the population that suffer from depression and can’t do without any formal support. It has also been proved that people suffering from anxiety disorder usually suffer from an anxiety disorder. C) The connectionIt is a known fact that most depressed individuals may develop feelings of helplessness and ultimately end up suffering from anxiety. In some cases, anxiety comes first and depression follows. To sum up, depression and anxieties are two separate conditions that may follow one another at certain circumstances.

Cosmetic Acupuncture: A Beauty Secret

October 27th, 2008 by admin

Cosmetic Acupuncture: A Beauty Secret

Given the notoriety of the dangers associated with cosmetic surgery, it is not surprising that ladies are seeking alternatives. Cosmetic surgery involves anesthesia, lasts for many hours, and leaves one with swelling, bruising, and redness. Recovery time is at least a couple of weeks.

A newer and much safer way to reach desirable cosmetic results has come about. Cosmetic acupuncture does not enlist the side effects that would have to endure if they were to go under the knife. While one may be getting an instant facelift, the results do become pleasantly noticeable after a period of time. It absolutely beats having someone cut your skin open and perform gruesome tasks that might leave you with scars for weeks!

The person doing the procedure will put small needles into the skin near each wrinkle or frown line. These needles encourage energy in the facial tissue, sending blood to the surface, and relaxing the muscles. Then each muscle tightens, decreasing the sag of the skin on the face. The insertion of the needles also encourages each cell to build collagen fibers to lift wrinkles and eliminate fine lines. The International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture recently published evidence that 9 out of 10 people who underwent acupuncture to the face experienced softer facial lines, better skin tone, smaller circles under their eyes and an overall facial rejuvenation.

Prices and number of treatments vary from one practitioner to the next. When searching for a practitioner, be wary to choose someone with a license who has studied with a qualified teacher, and is part of the American cosmetic acupuncture association.

Patients undergoing acupuncture as treatment for skin conditions will be pleasantly surprised to find that acupuncture has an uplifting effect on their well-being as a whole. Acupuncture has been used for a long list of complaints, including stress, insomnia, anxiety, and depression. Many individuals question the effectiveness of facial acupuncture, but it’s easy to see that when one’s overall health improves so should the appearance of one’s skin.

As skeptics will point out, the average facelift is far from permanent, lasting only 3 - 5 years. No matter how many procedures someone has, in order to delay the aging process, a few years down the road from surgery, new aging effects will become apparent.

Picking The Right Anxiety Treatment Article - Health Articles

October 27th, 2008 by admin

Looking for an Anxiety Attack Treatment that Works?

Finding the right anxiety remedy is not like going to the store and getting a bottle of pills. Just picking any treatment will not be effective without first understanding a little about why you have the condition in the first place. While medication can relieve symptoms, it will not cure the underlying problem.

Eight major groups of life challenges are known as potential anxiety causes. Almost all involve dealing with life changes. The ebb and flow of your life is about the one thing all of us seem to hate, that is, C-H-A-N-G-E. Anything that changes our routine from eating, personal habits, our environment, etc. all can cause mental and emotional distress. For many with more serious mental illness, even the change in a place to stay can cause untold mental anguish and suffering. Humans don’t like change even if it is good for us.

Good resources on anxiety remedy are available at the link below.

The key then is to realize that this mental condition is complex and challenging to completely understand. Treatment alternatives are available however and can include the following.

One of the most popular ways many attempt to treat anxiety is with drugs. 3 of the most popular prescription drugs sold in the U.S. today are anti-anxiety or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor or SSRI type meds. These include: Xanax, an anti-anxiety drugs like Valium, along with Paxil and Lexapro. The fact that they remain popular may suggest that while symptoms are controlled, these drugs are not really a long term cure or solution.

They are very good at relieving symptoms associated with anxiety however. The side effects are cause for concern and care must be taken when these drugs are used. While there is evidence to suggest that “SOME” teenagers with varying degrees of anxiety and depression may be more likely to commit suicide, that fact alone shouldn’t be enough to completely ignore all the benefits this class of medications have done for patients.

The point is that all drugs come with risk and the potential side effects. Only you and your doctor can determine what’s right for you. For many however, this class of medications is considered more a shorter term relief while the causes of the problem are more fully considered, reviewed and corrected.

The other popular methods of treatment use either group or private counseling focusing on behavior or cognitive therapy.

Lastly, natural supplements, relaxation, breathing etc. can also be used. These are much more subtle in their effects but with fewer side effects make them a viable option for many with mild to moderate anxiety.

So if you consider all the mental conditions that have anxiety as a symptom and add up all the different treatment options, you can recognize how difficult it can be to get an accurate diagnosis. This doesn’t mean that you can’t get be helped. It only means that you may need to try several things before finding the treatment that will work best for you.

If you’ve only now discovered that something isn’t right and you suspect anxiety, checking out anxiety remedy choices may be the thing to do. Why commit to expensive prescription medications or long term counseling before learning about safer options. If you or a loved on is suffering with anxiety or depression and have considered suicide, call 911 and get help now. Suicide is a permanent solution to a short term problem
