And, “my dad hired them, and I didn’t really get to talk to them much”. OUCH! I can understand the excitement and all the things that go into the wedding planning, the dress, the food, the entertainment, the venue, the bridesmaids, the flowers, the honeymoon…………and at times, (almost like an after thought) the photography! Hey, listen after all is said and done, the food is gone, the dress in hanging in a closet (or in a box), the people are all gone, and what remains are the photos!!!! There is only one thing (along with the memories) that remains, the images captured during the wedding events! So please pay attention BEFORE the wedding by using the following 3 simple ideas: NUMBER ONE: MAKE SURE YOU TALK TO THE PHOTOGRAPHER(S) YOURSELF. The biggest reason brides are unhappy is because either someone else hired the photographer and didn’t communicate EXACTLY what their expectations were, or they didn’t take time themselves to communicate what they expected. And, along with that, it is so important to meet with the photographer (on the phone at least) and discuss your style vs the photographers style……..so you can be sure of a match. I am assuming you took a look at their work and you know a little about them. NUMBER TWO: FOR THE MOST PART EXPECT TO END UP WITH IMAGES LIKE YOU SEE IN THE PHOTOGRAPHERS EXAMPLES. A lot of brides are unhappy because they expected something they didn’t get. Surprise, they usually get what the photographer is used to providing. Most photographers have a signature style, expect anything else and you may end up being disappointed. Make sure you know who you are talking to and exactly what the photographer’s strengths are and what they are good at. Some are good at the photojournalistic approach, while others may specialize in a more formal approach. The point is make sure that what they are good at and specialize in, is what you want. And, if not, at least make sure you are on the same page going into the wedding day! NUMBER THREE: MAKE SURE THE PHOTOGRAPHER KNOWS WHO IS WHO. I hear bride after bride who cries the blues because someone who was at the wedding party wasn’t in any of the photographs. I hear that the grooms cousins weren’t in them or his siblings or (heaven forbid) his children - or the bride’s…….IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. I can’t tell you strongly enough, make sure the photographer knows who is who. At most weddings there are so many people that without direction, the photographer has NO WAY of knowing who is who..VERY IMPORTANT!!!! A great rule of thumb is to get to know the photographer(s) who are going to be there, make sure their style is your the same as your style and that they know WHO is WHO!
