Standing by Yourself With a Lift Chair

October 15th, 2008 by admin

There are plenty of individuals who don’t like asking for assistance. Some feel like requesting assistance is a sign of weakness or that it is a sign of their age. Still others think that by requesting assistance, they are putting a strain on their family, so rather than ask for help they go without. This practice is quite common and frequently it is some of the more regular everyday things that become hard to ask for help from. One of the tasks that commonly become more difficult with age is standing up.Since getting off of the couch or out of an easy chair is something most people do several times a day, it can be easy to feel like you are putting a burden on those that are caring for you. While it is likely that your family does not feel this way, being able to stand up freely and without any help is something that can have great therapeutic, both physical and mental, benefit. One of the best and most preferred methods of allowing an individual to easily stand and sit is by the use of a lift chair. These chairs can be easily raised by the occupant, or by a caretaker, and when the chair is at its maximum height, it is a simple matter for the individual to exit safely into an upright position. These seats allow a person to stand without any help or ensure that a caretaker can easily care for their ward without putting undue strain on their back. There are a lot of different chairs available, but they share several similar characteristics. Today all quality chairs use an electric motor to raise the chair. The chair also allows the backrest and footrest to be controlled electronically, which adds comfort and customization.Early models had used springs instead of an electric motor to raise the chair, but this was not safe, so the practice was largely discontinued. From time to time, you might come across a chair that uses a spring lifting system. A good indication is the price of the chair, because the spring chairs usually cost considerably less than a regular lift chair. Due to safety hazards, you should always avoid spring loaded chairs. Keep in mind that if a company is offering these chairs, they are ignoring all safety warnings in order to make a profit. As such, you should not purchase anything from a company that sells chairs that use a spring lifting mechanism, because it is clear they do not have the interests of their customers at heart. While lift recliners all generally share some characteristics, they are generally classified by how far they can be reclined. The most common type of lift recliner is the 3-position chair. These chairs recline almost all the way back and are great for sleeping. Infinite position chairs are also very common. Infinite position chairs can recline just as much as a 3-position chair, but the footrest can be operated independently of the backrest. 2-position chairs can be reclined to a position that is about 45 degrees and commonly called TV Recline. It should be noted that even though the chairs are called 3-position or 2-position chairs, they are not only limited to 2 or 3 positions and can instead be reclined to any point up until they reach their limit. Those that use lift recliners do not need to ask for help when getting up out of their chair and for many this is very important. It removes any feeling of burden, increases your safety, and allows you to stand at anytime you want on your own schedule.Brad Brubaker is an experienced writer. It is not uncommon for people to dislike asking for help, because they feel like they are creating a burden for their family. While largely baseless, this feeling can be conquered by using lift chairs. Find out more about these chairs and more by visiting US Medical Supplies today. If you have any questions give them a call or download the brochures they have available for most of their products.

External Hemorrhoids, How You Can Help

October 15th, 2008 by admin

External hemorrhoids can be felt as bulges at the anus, but they usually cause few of the symptoms that are typical of internal hemorrhoids. This is perhaps, because they are low in the anal canal and have little effect on the function of the anus, particularly the anal sphincter. These type are hemorrhoids covered by squamous epithelium, whereas internal ones are lined with columnar epithelium. Similarly, external hemorroids are innervated by cutaneous nerves that supply the perianal area. They can, on the other hand, are characterized by painful swelling and/or a hard lump close to the anus. For some people, hemorrhoid pain may reveal themselves as blood clots forming in the hemroidal tissue, a condition diagnosed as thrombosed external hemroids, which requires treatment in the form of surgery. They also develop around the opening of the anus and are usually very painful as the skin around them is very sensitive. In most cases though, they are just bothersome protrusions, which make hygiene and personal care very difficult. External hemorrhoid piles are usually visible as fleshy lumps around the anus.Seldom they can be mistaken with prolapsed hemorrhoids (internal hemorrhoids that protrude out the anus). Many times, however, they are commonly associated with pain and itching as well as bleeding. Thus, most of the approximately 500,000 Americans who seek a hemorrhoid cure each year are afflicted with the external type of the swollen veins.External hemorrhoids can also be caused by frequent bouts of constipation that cause you to strain during bowel movements. On the other hand, this type can also be caused by frequent and excessive diarrhea. External hemorrhoids are those found on the outside of the anus. A thrombosed hemorrhoid occurs when a hemorrhoid becomes strangulated, meaning that its blood supply is cut off.You can get some hemorrhoid pain relief by not getting constipated, this one of the main causes for these terrible, bother some critters, as far as how long do hemorrhoids last depends on the severity of this type.Author: Gregory Wadel Get the resources Needed to Eliminate Your Hemorrhoids In 48 Hours. http://wadeshealthmatters.info

Changing Lifestyles and Declining Fertility

October 15th, 2008 by admin

Today we live life on the fast track, controlled and manipulated like robots, by the hands of the clock. Life is one mad rush to compete, excel, amass wealth and often spend it in ‘riotous’ living. The human body is comfort-loving. Food, sleep, recreation, sex are requirements that keep a person healthy. An imbalance in any of these essentials is bound to create physiological and psychological upheavals. Nowhere is it so explicitly evident as in the field of Reproduction and Fertility. In the last forty years, Fertility has shown a decline especially in affluent countries or where the level of education is high. Rapidity of social change is another factor.Either the woman, the man or the couple jointly, may be the cause of declining fertility.Women Changing roles of women have been cited as the foremost reason. About 64% of all working women are married. In some families they are the sole bread winners. It is this empowerment that has given women a lot of attitude both in their behaviour and fashion statements. Many working women claim that they have no domestic skills at all. Changing Lifestyles: Smoking, drugs and alcohol consumption can have an adverse effect on fertility. Someone described a child born to an alcoholic mother as a “pathetic little creature, starved, shriveled and imperfect.” Risky behaviour: De-linking sex from marriage has led to cohabitation before marriage and extra marital liaisons. Promiscuousness is a significant trend of this millennium. Women are therefore exposed to sexually transmitted disease, HIV, AIDs and other bacterial infections, which can cause blockage of the tubes. Frequent termination of unwanted pregnancies can also leave residual infection in the fallopian tubes or cause incompetence of the cervix. The latter can cause recurrent abortions when the woman eventually decides on keeping her pregnancy. Late Marriages and Late pregnancies: The ill effects of postponing pregnancy till very late cannot be ignored. The most fertile period in a woman’s life is between 22-30 years. Fertility decreases after forty. Though many women like Cherry Blair and Susan Sarandon have delivered in their late forties, this is certainly not an ideal age. As one grows older, the likelihood of spontaneous abortions and abnormal fetuses increase. Medical complications like pregnancy induced hypertension, Eclampsia, or Diabetes can occur. Labours too can be difficult, and the incidence of operative deliveries shoots up.Hypertension, Diabetes, Coronary heart disease are problems of middle age. When these already exist, pregnancy puts them in a ‘high risk’ category. The growth of the fetus may be affected or there may be chromosomal abnormalities. Children born to such mothers may also be genetically programmed to suffer from similar diseases in their adult life. Identity Crisis: Because of the dual roles of home maker and wage earner, long working hours, lack of sleep, women suffer from anxiety and tension. Stress acts on the adrenal glands which become over active, and even produce small quantities of male hormone. Many career women are aware of it. Some choose to ignore it but others quit their high powered jobs and opt for motherhood.Cortisol leads to higher waist:hip ratio. Sometime ago the BMJ carried an interesting article about the way body fat distribution can influence fertility more than age or obesity. Researchers in Netherlands reported that 0.1 unit in waist:hip ratio led to 30% decrease in conception rates, irrespective of age or weight.Men.Studies from US show that 25-30 million men have suffered from a decline of sperm count over the years. Another study by the Mumbai Institute of Research for Reproduction shows that the quality and quantity of sperm have declined over the last couple of decades. Tests were done on 1500 men between 1986-95, which showed a reduction in sperm count by 30% and reduction in motility by 10%. Similar trends were noticed in England, France, Denmark Scotland and Finland. In the West, this was attributed to an increase in testicular cancer, and in India, due to pollution with pesticides containing a high percentage of lead. Behaviour changes: “Metrosexuals” are learning to be more feminine, more accommodating and more emotional. They like to preen themselves like women. Male beauty products have gone up by 30%, and those asking for plastic surgery have increased by 20%. According to New York Times, male models look “chicken chested, hollow cheeked and undernourished.”With wives who are economically independent, many feel disempowered. They are confused about their status within the family, and even categorize themselves as the “newly oppressed minority.” Lifestyles: Lucrative and competitive jobs are not without their share of stress. Erratic
mealtimes, fast food, processed food, lack of exercise, constant preoccupation with TV or the Internet make both male and female bodies resistant to Insulin. As a result, more insulin is produced, and there is more accumulation of fat, leading to obesity, which diminishes fertility.
Alcohol, though it increases desire, decreases performance. Drugs such as marijuana reduce testosterone levels by up to 41%. Narcotics, tranquillizers, and certain medicinal drugs are known to reduce fertility.Similarly, infections like TB, Gonorrhea cause epididymal obstruction. Fashion: The normal sperm count is between 60-200million/ml. Studies show that counts have dropped by 1/3 in men between 30-40 years. This may be due to groin hugging jeans that are popular with the young. Tight jeans push back the testicles into the body, where the temperature of 98.6 degrees is 3 degrees higher than in the scrotum. Similarly men using laptops also increase the temperature in the scrotum, as laptops operate at 70 degrees C. Those who keep their cell phones in their pockets or clipped on to belts while using a ear piece to chat may also be compromising their sperms. Age: Men may be able to retain their virility up till the seventh decade, but the belief that they could father normal children is debated. Advanced paternal age can cause autism or schizophrenia in their offspring. Harry Fischer in his book “The Male Biological Clock” says fertility reduces with age, and the risk of genetic abnormality in their progeny is high. Andropause or male menopause may happen between 50-60 years. Males suffer from loss of libido in addition to other symptoms like fatigue, loss of muscle volume, enlarged prostate and emotional problems.Couples:As income and social status increase, sexual activity reduces. Sometimes couples try to outdo each other in job status or earning capacity. This creates a “no win” situation in the bed room. A number of double income couples say they have no time for sex. 50% of these suffer from infertility because of infrequent sexual activity. When it does happen, it is a mechanical ritual. Many men find it difficult to adjust to the demands of living with modern wives. With changing sexual equations, women not only flaunt their sexuality but demand fulfillment. When disappointed, they openly express dissatisfaction with their spouses. This can cause psychological infertility and impotence in men. When husbands work in other cities or countries, or are frequently away from home, like pilots or traveling salesmen, there is less opportunity for marital sex. The ‘Absentee Husband Syndrome’ is responsible for falling sperm counts.Voluntary Childless Couples are on the rise. This may be by mutual consent. Fear of what children can do to such career oriented people makes them deprive themselves of sexual gratification. Sex becomes an enemy to be avoided at all costs. Because natural urges are suppressed, instability in marriage relations may set in. Sexual anorexia expresses itself in psychosomatic symptoms including infertility. On the other hand, it could also lead to extra-marital escapades or create an addiction to clandestine sex. Some couples consider the high cost of nurturing and educating children, and prefer not to have any.It is time for couples to re-assess their life styles and working patterns. Sorting out power balances in a marriage partnership will facilitate ‘togetherness’ and ‘intimacy’. Families are important building blocks of society, and children are a ‘godly heritage.’Eva Bell is a doctor of Medicine and also a freelance writer of articles, short stories, children stories.Published in Indian magazines and newspapers, anthologies and also on the web.Author of two novels, one non-fiction, two children’s books. October 15th, 2008 by admin

Whether you need help recovering from an accident, surgery, or need long term care for a chronic illness or disability, home health care is often a viable option that has been gaining popularity, for a reason. Studies have shown that recovering at home is better for a patient’s physical and mental health. Today’s home health care services can provide everything from help with errands and chores like cooking and cleaning, to skilled medical care from nurses and therapists. But with so many new home health care agencies popping up, how do you know which one to choose?Luckily, if you follow these basic guidelines, you can be confidant when choosing your home health care provider : Check out the agency’s credentials.
Make sure the home health care service you choose is licensed in your state, is certified by Medicare, and is accredited by a governing agency such as The Joint Commission’s Home Care Accreditation Program. Check out the caregivers’ credentials.
Besides looking for providers that are friendly and helpful, make sure you inquire about the caregivers’ professional training. Are they bonded and insured? Does the home health care service have a supervisor oversee the quality of the service? Also, ask for references for the caregivers themselves, and find out if the home health care agency screens their employees. Clarify all billing issues.
The agency should be able to provide literature clearly explaining its fees and services. Make sure you know up front about co-pays, deductibles, and uncovered expenses. Ask if they offer any kind of financial assistance to those in need. Be clear on what services you are getting.
Inquire about receiving a written plan detailing the services you will be receiving, so that there is no confusion. Make sure you know the specific services your home health caregiver will be providing, including any chores or housework. Also, find out what hours the home health care service provider has on-call help, in case of an emergency. A 24 hour hotline with someone on call is desirable and helpful. Finally, after your home health care plan is in place, monitor the services, making sure it is in line with what was actually discussed. By taking these steps you can assure that your home health care service will be beneficial to all.We Care Staffing : NY Home Health Care Services http://www.wecarestaffinginc.comWe Care Staffing Inc. offers Home Health Care services in the comfort of your home. Campylobacter Contagion

October 15th, 2008 by admin

The Campylobacter organism is responsible for causing most of the diarrheal illness in the United States. The majority of cases is caused by one species, called Campylobacter jejuni, but illness can also be caused by other species. Campylobacter jejuni prefers the body temperature of a bird, and seems to be well adapted to birds, who carry it without becoming ill. These spiral-shaped bacteria are fragile, they cannot tolerate drying and oxygen is toxic to them. They grow best in places with less oxygen than the amount in the atmosphere. Freezing raw meat can reduce the amount of Campylobacter.A very small amount of Campylobacter can cause illness in a person. Most cases of illness occur in isolated incidents, but outbreaks have been known to occur. Eating raw or undercooked poultry meat is the main cause of infection. Cross contamination from food that has come into contact with raw juice from poultry can cause illness. Cutting raw meat on a cutting board and then using the contaminated cutting board for preparing vegetables or other ingredients can lead to cross contamination.Unpasteurized milk can contain Campylobacter if it is contaminated from a cow with an infection in her udder or if the milk is contaminated with manure. Surface water and mountain streams can become a risk from infected feces from cows or wild birds. Water supply contamination is common in the developing world, so travelers to foreign countries are also at risk for becoming infected with Campylobacter.Large flocks of chickens can be infected with Campylobacter but show no signs of illness. The organism can be easily spread from bird to bird by sharing a water source or contact with infected feces. Sometimes when an infected bird is slaughtered, Campylobacter organisms can be transferred from the intestines to the meat.People who have Campylobacteriosis may get diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain, and fever within two to five days after exposure to the organism. The diarrhea may contain blood and can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. One week is the typical duration. Some infected persons do not exhibit any symptoms. Individuals with compromised immune systems may be at risk for Campylobacter spreading to the bloodstream and causing a serious life-threatening infection. The majority of people infected with Campylobacter recover without any specific treatment. People with the infection should drink extra fluids as long as the diarrhea lasts. In more severe cases, antibiotics such as erythromycin or a fluoroquinolone can be taken which can shorten the duration of symptoms if given promptly. In rare cases, Campylobacteriosis may trigger Guillain-Barr syndrome that affects the nerves of the body. It begins several weeks after the diarrheal illness. This may happen when a person’s immune system is triggered to attack the body’s own nerves resulting in paralysis that can last several weeks and requires intensive care. Approximately one in every 1,000 reported Campylobacter illnesses leads to Guillain-Barr syndrome. 40% of Guillain-Barr syndrome cases in this country may be triggered by Campylobacteriosis.http://www.ivdresearch.com/stool.htmlhttp://www.safepath.com

Constipation is One of the Main Causes of Hemorrhoids

October 15th, 2008 by admin

Thrombosis usually occurs in external hemorrhoids but does occur in both types. Thrombosed external hemorrhoids can be incised and the clot evacuated. Thrombosis that has been present for more than 72 hours often can be treated expectantly if the pain is not too severe. In this circumstance, avoidance of constipation, patient analgesia, and ice or sitz baths to the perineum may result in more rapid symptom relief than will surgical excision. Thrombosis - also known as blood clots - tends to occur when external hemorrhoids are not treated for long periods of time. The area where the external hemorrhoid occurs may develop blood clots that turns purple or blue and that bleed.Bleeding hemorrhoids can be either internal or external hemorrhoids. These are a painful condition which veins in the rectal and anal area become swollen. Bleeding, however, whether painful or not, should always be evaluated and usually should be treated. Bleeding starts when the swollen veins are scratched or broken by straining or rubbing. People who have external hemorrhoids may feel itching at the anus too.Fiber and bran retain water in the stool, producing soft, bulky stools which are easier to pass and reduce the tendency to develop hemorrhoids. These also come in less expensive generic versions. Fibers should be part of a healthy diet because they can fight constipation as well, and constipation is known to worsen Hemorrhoids. So eat a lot of green vegetables and avoid animal protein, processed and refined foods, sugar, ice cream, fried foods, cheeses, peanuts, junk foods, tobacco, alcohol, and salt. Fiber supplements might be helpful ?examples include Metamucil and Citrucel.Constipation is a main cause of the formation of Hemorrhoids. Increasing water and fiber consumption, simultaneously, will decrease your likelihood of becoming constipated. Constipation often leads to straining and this more than anything else is the chief cause of hemorrhoids. The additional pressure causes the veins to enlarge. Constipation may contribute to straining. In a few people, hemorrhoids develop from increased blood pressure in the portal vein. There are some ways to get hemorrhoid pain relief, and as far as how long do hemorrhoids last all depends on the cure your trying to use.Author: Gregory Wadel Find Out How To Get Rid Of Your Hemorrhoids In 48 Hours. http://wadeshealthmatters.info

The Reason External Hemorrhoids Can Be So Sensitive

October 15th, 2008 by admin

External hemorrhoids may become thrombosed when blood clots develop inside the lump itself. This can make the lump extremely sensitive from irritation caused by any activity, even walking or sitting. External hemorrhoids, and some prolapsed internal hemorrhoids, are removed by conventional surgery in a hospital. Depending on the circumstances, this requires a local, regional, or general anesthetic. External hemorrhoids are kind of default hemorrhoids. When we talk about hemorrhoid problems, EH are usually what we mean.External hemorrhoids elicit symptoms caused by acute thrombosis, recurring thromboses, or personal hygiene problems. Acute and recurrent thromboses are managed by identifying the offending vascular cluster with the use of local anesthetic in the doctor’s office or other clinical setting. External hemorrhoids cause pain and bleeding. When a external hemorrhoid has a blood clot lodged within it, a thrombosed external hemorrhoid is present. They lie outside the anal opening. Both kinds can be present at the same time. These type are located in the lower anal canal. These are usually removed with surgery. It can be applied to second-stage hemorrhoids which have failed . External hemorrhoids are asymptomatic except when secondary thrombosis occurs. However, some patients with non-thrombosed hemorrhoids may complain of pruritus ani or itching, swelling, and burning sensation.Blood may appear on toilet paper, in the toilet bowl or on the surface of the stool. Sometimes mucus is also seen on toilet paper or stool. Blood from hemorrhoids is bright red in color and great debility co-exists. Blood clots within an anal blood vessel and ulcerated swollen strangulated hemorrhoids can be readily diagnosed on inspection of the rectum. usually a anusol preparation for bleeding hemorrhoids or a Examination after straining at stool or a phosphate enema often reveals the extent of a person’s hemorrhoidal pain and condition.Author: Gregory Wadel Get Rid Of Your Hemorrhoids In 48 Hours… http://wadeshealthmatters.info
