Acai Berry: 3 Exciting Health Benefits That May Surprise You

November 2nd, 2008 by admin

A little berry from the Amazon Rainforest has recently skyrocketed in popularity here in America. Already legendary in Brazil for its nutritional benefits and healing ability, the acai berry has been touted by the media, most notably Dr. Perricone on the Oprah show, and dubbed “The worlds #1 superfood”.

A superfood is defined as any natural food that has an extraordinarily high nutrient content, and the acai berry certainly delivers. It contains healthy fats, iron, amino acids, and, most importantly, a remarkable amount of free radical fighting antioxidants.

These powerful antioxidants are the main reason for all the hoopla about the acai berry, and they are behind many of the more well known benefits of acai. Some of which include: More powerful immune system, increased energy and stamina, reduced pain and soreness, increased disease resistance, improved vision and more.

But there are three other benefits that aren’t as well known, but much more exciting. Let’s take a look…

The Acai Berry Increases Libido

Interestingly enough, the acai berry is commonly referred to in Brazil as “Amazon Rainforest Viagra. Some doctors even recommend the acai berry to couples who are having difficulty getting pregnant.

Why is acai revered so much for increasing libido? Well, besides hundreds of years of “hands on testing”, Brazilian natives point to its powerful ability to increase energy and stamina. And, although it hasn’t been proven by science, they also insist that there’s something else in it that naturally boosts the sex drive.

Acai Berry Controls Weight Gain%26amp;#8232;

Combined with proper diet and exercise, the acai berry can be an excellent weight loss aid. It has a natural combination of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, amino acids, phytosterols, and amino acids that work together to help your body function better, process food easier, and burn fat more efficiently.

It’s also a near perfect fuel for the body and, as such, increases energy and stamina allowing you to work out harder and for longer periods of time. In fact, Jiu-jitsu practitioners and soccer players in Brazil often have a large meal of acai berry pulp before a competition. If it works for them, imagine how well it will keep you going on a treadmill.

Acai Berry Fights Cancer%26amp;#8232;

If you have any doubts about the power of the antioxidants in the acai berry, they’re about to be gone forever.

The University of Florida published a study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry that found that the acai berry triggered a self destruct response in up to 86% of human cancer cells. Yes, you read that right. The acai berry actually killed cancer cells in laboratory tests!

Of course there’s a lot of research to be done before anyone can say if the acai berry is a cure for cancer, but the study was certainly an eye opener to the amazing healing abilities of the acai berry. Hopefully, with the recent surge of interest in the acai berry, more and more exciting benefits will be found.

How to Choose the Right Weight Loss Pills For You?

November 2nd, 2008 by admin

Losing weight is a long and uphill battle. We often give up before we even reach the end of the game. Some of us fall into a vicious cycle of yo-yo dieting. The good news is it does not always have to be this way. What you may need is the help of weight loss pills.

If you stumble start over

Falling off the wagon is normal. Having a cake or a slice of pizza will not bring the end of the world. If you give in to your cravings today, exercise it off tomorrow. The important thing is not to give up.

Get the right help

Sometimes going to the gym and eating right is not enough. When exercising and the right foods are not yielding results, you may want to consider using weight loss pills.

What are weight loss pills?

Weight loss pills are supplements that can do two things for you: help you loose weight and help you keep the weight off. The problem is, there are so many of these pills flooding the market that you never know which pill to choose.

Choosing the right weight loss pills

Read the label. The label contains the active ingredients of the pill, manufacturer, contraindications and good through date. If the label is too small or incomplete, it should be supplemented by other forms of literature that comes with the product. Drug companies are required by law to disclose what their pills contain so take advantage of this. Raise a red flag if the bottle or box does not disclose its ingredients or any important information.

Know the weight loss pills’ ingredients. Extra care is needed when it comes to supplements. Some ingredients may be very effective in suppressing appetite but are extremely dangerous like fen-phen or fenfluramine and phentermine. Studies show that these two affect the heart and nervous system adversely. Pills containing fen-phen have been pulled out of the market.

Natural is good but not always. The word natural and herbal do not always mean safe. Remember, most medicines have been cultivated from plants and other living organisms. This means that they have their own levels of potencies and contraindications. An herbal plant that treats anemia may also raise your blood pressure.

Know your brand and manufacturer. Weight loss pills are taken orally so make sure that what you are putting in your mouth is made by a reputable company. Drug companies value good will more than anything else so they will go through great lengths to protect it.

Ask your doctor. Your doctor is the best person to advise you about your health. He or she is familiar with your medical history. Never take any supplement without consulting your doctor first. You can ask him or her at great lengths to explain the active components of supplements. More importantly, he or she is in a position to tell you whether taking such pills will help or harm you.

Weight loss pills may help you achieve your ideal fitness level or figure. Take your time in choosing the right pill. Make sure that you choose the most helpful pill for you.

Does Chocolate Trigger Migraine?

November 2nd, 2008 by admin

Another common trigger of migraine is chocolate, the link between chocolate and migraine headaches was considered during a large study, and the results were published in the Lancet(1).

Chocolate is one of the few foods which has been investigated in double blind controlled studies, to determine how much of a trigger it really is - unlike many other food products, which have merely been included as part of larger studies using a wide range of possibilities.

These double blind, focused studies seem to leave some ambiguity in the subject. A 1974 study undertaken at the London Hospital apparently concluded that whilst chocolate may be a trigger, it wasn’t a significant one(2). This was a full five years prior to the Lancet study, which ranked chocolate near the top of the list along with other triggers, considered predominantly to cause migraines.

Another study done in 1997 also used a double blind protocol and placebo to try and pinpoint chocolate as an aggressive migraine trigger - again with inconclusive results. The study, carried out at the University of Pittsburgh, Pain Evaluation and Treatment Institute, concluded there was no difference between patients given chocolate and others given the carob placebo in either occurrence or severity of migraines(3).

Of course, one must take into account the overwhelming amount of anecdotal and testimonial evidence from hundreds of thousands of migraine sufferers who report chocolate as a trigger. Many of these claim that removing it from their diet caused instant cessation - whereas accidental or careless reintroduction caused just as immediate recurrence of symptoms.

There does exist an unpublished study, on which correspondence exists, involving a trial with 20 patients who, believing chocolate to be a migraine trigger, were subsequently challenged with either chocolate or a placebo. The 8 receiving the placebo had no incidence of migraine - five out of the 12 who received chocolate did have a typical migraine attack. The small number of people in the test group meant that the subsequent results were not completely conclusive.

As is so often the case with food intolerances, what one person can eat without an ill-effects, can create an unpleasant or even harmful reaction in another. Consider the simple peanut - a killer for some, a harmless snack for another.

Obviously scientific studies are interesting and essential, but however much we crave it, chocolate is something we can live without. The most effective method to discover if it’s a trigger food for the individual, is to cut it out from their diet for a few weeks. If your migraines are bad enough, it’s a simple sacrifice to make.

10 Tips to Lose 10 Pounds Quick

November 2nd, 2008 by admin

10 Eating Tips To Lose 10 Pounds Fast

1. Drink plenty of water. Many people overlook the importance of water. Don’t make this mistake and give your body lots of water. Water is not just a way to flush out toxin but if you have more water in your body you will generally feel healthier and fitter. This will discourage your from gorging. Water has no calories.

2. Kick the soda and sweet drinks. Hey all those colas and fizzy drinks are sweetened with sugar and sugar means calories. The more you cut out bottled drinks the better you are off. So if you must drink sodas, then stick to diet sodas.

3. Always choose fresh fruit over drinking fruit juice. Juice is often sweetened but fresh fruits have natural sugars. When you eat fruit, you are taking in a lot of fiber, which is needed by the body, and fruits of course are an excellent source of vitamins.

4. Always start your day off with a tall glass of water. As soon as you wake up, gulp down a glass of cool water. It’s a wonderful way to start you day and you only need a lesser quantity of your breakfast drink after that. Water will let out all your digestive juices and lubricates your insides. You may have your morning cup of tea but have it after a glass of water. It is good for you.

5. Include in your diet things that contain more water like tomatoes and watermelons. These things contain 90 to 95 % water so that there is nothing that you have to lose by feasting on them. They fill you up without adding to the pounds.

6. Choose fresh fruit to processed fruits. Processed and canned fruits do not have as much fiber as fresh fruit and processed and canned fruits are nearly always sweetened.

7. Increase your fiber intake. Like I mentioned, the body needs a lot of fiber. So try to include in your diet as many fruits and vegetables as you can.

8. Drink a glass of water before you start the meal. Water naturally needs some space so that you feel fuller without actually having to stuff yourself.

Drink water while eating. Once again this can make you feel full so you don’t eat for the sake of eating. Take sips after each morsel instead of gulps. It will help the food to settle faster so that you get that feeling that you are full faster.

9. Go crazy on vegetables. Vegetables are your best bet when it comes to losing pounds. Nature has a terrific spread when it comes to choosing vegetables. And the leafy green vegetables are your best bet. Always include a salad in your diet.

10. Eat intelligently. The difference between man and beast is that we are driven by intelligence while beasts are driven by instinct. Don’t just eat something because you feel like eating it. Ask yourself if you really need it.

Get Back in That Bikini - a Bikini Diet That Works!

November 2nd, 2008 by admin

She stands tall and confident on long muscular legs with sweeping quads. She is an athlete yet still feminine and poised. Her image is respected and she’s wearing maybe a workout outfit or a bikini and she is the epitome of health, and fitness. On this bikini diet she is the picture of strength and beauty many women strive to attain.

A bikini diet with a heaping plate full of mashed potatoes smothered in gravy, a big juicy steak topped off with a big slice of garlic toast with extra butter. Then you finish this off on a daily basis with a huge piece of chocalate cake with sugary icing that you wash down with your favorite soda.

Your day is consumed by eating three of these kinds of meals a day no exercise and plenty of couch sitting while watching your favorite television shows. Oh and don’t forget the junk food snacks and buttered popcorn while watching that favorite show. All this just to be on that bikini diet trying to find the quickest way to regain your figure.

Oh if only this were true. Why is it that our favorite foods we love the most are not the ones we need if we are on a bikini diet, but instead we need to eat foods that taste like cardboard and stirofoam? Why is it always so difficult?

Is it the diet helping us regain our figure or is there more to it than that? I suppose a bikini diet would also include a proper work out and exercise schedule along with a healthy diet consisting of a lot of vegetables, lean meats, foods low in sugar content but still able to give you a burst of energy.

Everyone is looking for a total package workout consisting of both a diet and a simple workout with no endless cardio, fancy equipment and no steriods to achieve that feminine strong muscle toned body in a bikii every girl these days wants.

What would be great would be a program that burns fat, tones muscle and is endorsed by elite trainers and top female fitness magazines. It would be a program that all women could use of all ages to gain that bikini look! Most importantly your workouts would be shorter and you wouldn’t have to work out 3 hours in the gym every day!

A bikini diet that can be done in the comfort of your own home without adding a lot of extra stress, using a minimal amount of time, maybe three or four times a week is the ideal diet and fitness program that would appeal to women of any age. In today’s world that would be a life saver.

Is Your Hair Damaged?

November 2nd, 2008 by admin

It could be that you are presently suffering from hair that is dry and damaged, and if so then you have joined a club that has millions of members already. Dry and damaged hair is one of the most common hair conditions that is present in both men and women, and this not any surprise at all.

When you consider what the hair has to put with such as the various elements of the weather, pollution and also the fact that people literally damage their hair themselves though the excessive use of hair dryers and styling products. Whilst these may aid the hair in looking great, they are not helping the hair to maintain its correct level of health.

If you are wondering about what you can do then there are many products that are available, and these can either be purchased or you can make your own hair care products. One of the best products that you can apply to your hair is that of mayonnaise. Whilst it may be a messy and also a very smelly process it certainly does work wonders as far as a hair treatment is concerned. But make sure that it is mayonnaise that you are using and not salad cream, and there is a big difference between the two.

There are also a huge range of products that can be purchased from most stores and some of these can be effective you just need to be careful that what you are applying does not cause any harsh chemicals. It is almost impossible to avoid hair care products as they can literally be found everywhere. They can be located in hair salons, various stores and even discount stores will be able to offer something that will hopefully be able to care for your hair.

You can wash your hair on a daily basis but you shouldn’t unless of course your hair is actually dirty. But depending on what your hair type is or just how damaged your hair type actually is will depend on the intensity of the treatment that you need to apply and also its frequency.

You are going to need to assess your situation and monitor the condition of your hair on an ongoing basis and once you have found a product that is showing some signs of positive result you need to be continuing with your routine.

But before you can find something that is going to be effective you may need to experiment with the various treatments that are available so you will need to exercise some level of patience, but in the long term this will pay off.

Under no circumstances should you allow your dry hair to let you become upset in any way, because there are probably more important things that you need to be doing. Make sure that you are doing your research and if you needed make an appointment with a hair stylist and get their opinion on how to go about restoring the look of your hair to its natural healthy state without causing any further damage.

How to Get Restful Sleep

November 2nd, 2008 by admin

Getting a good night’s sleep is more important than we might realize. After all, scientists have calculated that we spend more than a third of our lives sleeping. With all that time spent in bed, why not make the most of it and get the best restful sleep possible? By using Feng Shui, you can do just that. Here are some great ways to make sure your next night in bed is one that’s restorative and peaceful.

Your Bedroom Needs Help

It makes sense that when you’re having troubles sleeping; you look to your bedroom first. Your bedroom’s arrangement is often the cause of many sleeping disturbances. For example, if your furniture is too crowded or your bed is too big for the room, it can cause the energy of the room to be stuffy and tight - not an ideal combination for sleep. If you can free up some space in your bedroom, that’s going to help get things started.

You will also want to make sure you remove anything that emits EM (electromagnetic) waves - electronic alarm clocks, TVs, computers, etc. All of these will disrupt your natural energy patterns and cause you to not feel as well rested. Try replacing your alarm clock with a wind up version, but keep everything else away. If you can’t live without electronics in your bedroom, at least cover them up with a scarf to help limit your EM exposure.

Make sure your feet aren’t right at the door when you sleep as this is known as the corpse position in which your energy can be carried away at night. Also, if your bed is under a window, try to move it away from this position. Windows pull in energy at night and this can wash over you, causing you to have troubles sleeping well. If at all possible, make sure your bed is centered in your bedroom so that it’s the same distance from every wall. This is a balanced position that is soothing to the energy of the environment.

Limiting your exposure to water in the bedroom will also help you sleep better. Remove any pictures of water or fountains from your bedroom as well as keep your bed away from any wall that might be shared with a bathroom. Water energy is just too intense for sleeping. If you can’t get away from that shared wall, put up some sort of barrier between the bed and the wall.

Sleeping Soundly from Now On

Yes, there is more you can do to help keep yourself sleeping soundly through the night. First, make sure you don’t have any mirrors in the bedroom, especially facing you directly as you lie in bed. The reflections in the mirror can disrupt and startle your energy, even if you don’t wake up to the other ‘person’ in the mirror. If you have exposed beams on your ceiling, be sure to cover them up or at least move the bed out of the direct line of them. These can point negative energy at you as you sleep.

If it’s not too cold out, try to open up the windows of your bedroom from time to time to let in fresh and positive energy. And as with all Feng Shui advice, decluttering your bedroom will help your calming energy be enhanced as well. It will also help if you keep your closet doors closed - the energy from the chaos inside can be disruptive. The colors of your bedroom should also be subtle and neutral, if possible. Bright colors are just too energetic for sleeping.

As a final note, if you have an underbed storage box, make sure to remove it if you can. The clutter in here can seep negative energy into your sleep time - causing you to wake up tired and confused.

However, the weight gain that you experience during this time isn’t just happening to be happening, there are a variety of different factors that are known to contribute to this weight gain such as an increase in the fat stores within the body, the amniotic fluid, and the placenta.

All women, after giving birth, will lose the majority of this excess weight but yet and still, the majority of them are still going to house a few extra pounds that need to be shed. If you are a female that has just given birth to a child, and you have lost weight, but not as much as you would like, you can accomplish getting your body back in shape quickly so that you are able to fit into your pre-pregnancy clothes by following a few steps:

However, those women that have given birth via cesarean section usually will have to wait eight weeks before they are able to begin any type of exercise program. Whether you realize it or not, the ability to lose your baby weight quickly is a lot easier if you are able to take your little one along with you. Maybe you can join a mommy and me fitness class or enroll in some sort of stroller fitness class.

Busting the Most Common Female Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Myths

November 2nd, 2008 by admin

There are many myths that continue to surround weight training and bodybuilding among females. Some of these have hampered most women into trying bodybuilding. Here are some of the most common myths:

• Weight training makes a woman more masculine and bulky. Do not be misled by this common myth. Women do not produce testosterone as men do, therefore, it is impossible for women to increase their muscle sizes by simply carrying some weights. What deters most women from trying weightlifting is the appearance of most female bodybuilders. Remember that these women use anabolic steroids (also known as synthetic testosterone), hence, they tend to look more like males. Women who undergo weight training without anabolic steroids only get leaner muscles and cellulite-free bodies.

• Weight training can make women stiff and muscular. This is far from the truth as weight training increases a woman’s flexibility instead. Dumbbell presses, flexes, and chin-ups stretches all contribute to flexibility and not stiffness.

• Exercising increases a woman’s chest size. Breasts of women are composed of fatty tissues, thus, it is not possible to increase breast size just by simply lifting some weights. In fact, if your body goes under 12% of body fat, your breast size may even decrease. The confusion started because weight training increases the size of a person’s back (not the cup size).

• Weight training would turn fats into muscles. As much as metal cannot be turned into gold, this is also true of fats turning into muscles. Weight training makes you lose fat while developing muscles-these fats do not turn to muscles!

• Stopping weight training could turn muscles into flab. As much as fats don’t become muscles, muscles also do not become fat as soon as you let go of weight training. Remember that fats and muscles are two, separate types of tissues. The reason why people seemingly get fat after giving up on weight training is because most of them also give up on their diets and fitness programs as soon as they stop lifting weights.

• The only suitable exercise for women is cardio exercise and when they do decide to lift weights, they shouldn’t be heavy weights. Cardio exercises only provide fat burning. Once most of the body fat is gone, muscles can be further developed through weightlifting. Muscles respond to resistance training, so weightlifting is great training even for women.

• For as long as you do some exercises, you can eat anything and as much as you want. Not to burst your bubble but this is isn’t true at all. This is only applicable to people who have high metabolic rates or the so-called hardgainers. These people don’t have to exercise just to attain their desired weight or figure. If they don’t eat much, they can either maintain or lose weight. For all other people, the formula is quite simple-the more calories you eat, the more weight you gain.

Women should train hard not just to have a good looking body but also to be healthy and fit. So, go on, lift some weights and discard all inhibitions that you might have regarding weight fitness training.
